Photo taken by me on 9 August 2025 in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, from an elevated position near the Magazine Fort and looking south across the River Liffey toward the War Memorial Gardens.

In the middle ground is a bank of trees on the near-side of the Liffey, in which a gap has been cut and through which construction machinery can be seen working on levelled earth.

The original site of the foundry became the Phoenix Park in 1891, with the aim of providing a recreational space for the people lving in the crowded tenements of the Cowcaddens area of the city. The park was lost when the M8 motorway was built in the 1970s.

A Phoenix rising from the flames on the side of Maryhill Community Central Hall in Glasgow. This mural commemorates the Phoenix Ironworks, which was established at 52 Queen Street by Thomas Edington in 1797. It later moved to Garscube Road near the Central Hall, where they specialised in making ornamental ironwork.

The stump of a 225 year old tree in Phoenix Park, with key dates marked on its rings.

The stump of a severed tree in a park. In the distance can be seen a path and beyond that a road with a row of houses and a bus. There is a fence in front of the tree stump.A closer view of the tree stump, looking down on its flat surface. There is writing in red on it, but quite small and hard to read in the picture.A closer view again of the tree stump. The writing is more visible and marks rings on the tree stump corresponding to significant year. The tree was "born" c. 1800, with other dates marked including the Famine in 1849, the Fenian Rising, the 1st Home Rule Bill, the 1916 Rising, Ireland's partition, the end of WW2, Ireland becoming a republic, Pope John Paul II's visit to Ireland, and the Good Friday agreement.

My usual gate at #PhoenixPark was locked this morning. This gate hasn't been locked in years. Anyone know why?
