"According to fliers that police officers handed out…this week, scammers typically start by asking victims for donations for activities like sports teams, school activities or non-profits. They request the money to be sent via apps like Venmo, Cash App or Zelle — but then tell the victim they didn’t receive the donation, & offer to “help” by borrowing the victim’s phone…

Then scammers "transfer large sums of money from the victims’ accounts to their own."

Had thoughts about playing HAL9000's last song, but probably too short (and also not in Japanese🤷‍♂️):

I'm reading that with ten seconds of recording of your voice a pubically available AI app can create a clone of your voice.

smh

And a poster on Mastodon has posted a tutorial on a website on how to do this.

smh

It'll take more than ten seconds of sample for AI to be able to clone your phrasing and working vocab over a wide range of contexts.

But scammers won't need a wide range of contexts - urgent, panicked or stressed will be be quite good enough thank you.
