#Photoprism

Well I think I've finally managed to (mostly) and myself, and my Google One account is now cancelled.

I've managed to move all my email, contacts, calendar, drive files and server backups over to a mixture of + object store.

Photos have been on for some time now.

Still have an android phone, though. Don't think I'm going to do much about that.

It is now already Tuesday morning but everything is back online.

#Pihole is back up so #DNS resolution works again and the rest of the family can use the internet!
✅ NFS provisioners can provide persistent volumes,
#CertManager issues HTTPS certificates,
#Unifi controller is back up to allow me to actually make changes to my network config (such as, say, change DNS settings when pihole is down... )
#HomeAssistant automates away,
#Nextcloud is seeing sunnier days,
#Photoprism <3

Also managed to setup #photoprism in a Docker container to self host all of my photos and videos, finally #degoogle ing myself in that regard. That also feels good, but still working out the kinks with this workflow. Any tips appreciated.

Screenshot of the photo prism UI, navigated to my "Cities" album with a wall of images all related to urban life... buildings, bicycles, statues, murals, trees, skylines...

I am running #PhotoPrism on a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB of RAM, using a 1TB SSD as the main and only drive, using the Pimoroni NVMe Base.

So far, I could not properly measure the performance, because I don’t know how to do it, but I am satisfied! Yet, this is definitely not a future-proof solution, since I need way more storage: I still haven’t imported most of my pictures there, and I need to prepare for plenty more to come.

The simplest (yet quite pricey, 261£) option would be to get a Pimoroni NVMe Duo and maximize it with a total of 4TB NVMe SSDs.

I think this is not optimal, though, and probably I could be spending all that money much better… Do you have any advice?

The thing about hosting a personal media gallery is that it requires a lot of resources when indexing the pictures (so only when you add new ones), then it’s super light—correct me if I am wrong, @photoprism. Hence, I’m thinking the best would be an extensible solution where I can add many HDDs and SSDs, without being forced to pump up the other specs too. I would probably be using just one NVMe SSD for the software and the database, and then save everything else in high-performance HDDs, since they are getting cheap and I can get much more storage with less money—of course I am performing a daily backup off-site, as they are more likely to fail, too.

If I am 100% sure that whatever I end up choosing will be solid for many years to come, I am willing to consider spending a bit more on it.

Pulling my hair out.

OMV 7 on an Argon Eon PiNAS (rPi4, see link below), photoprism via OMV plugin.
"photoprism index" starts, and then after a few seconds hard-reboots the host.

Nothing on console, in syslog, in journal.
Anyone got ideas where to look next?

Vous avez d'autres alternatives à me conseiller ? J'aimerais avoir quelques retours d'expérience. 😃

Does anyone run @photoprism on a Synology NAS? How is the performance? I‘m not sure if my DS723+ is fast enough for a library with 50.000 photos and videos. At the moment I only have 2 GB of RAM but I could upgrade to 8 or 16 GB, if needed. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I'm looking for a #photo app (something like iCloud photos) but #self-hosted. Must be able to be hosted locally and must have an iOS app so that there is automatic sync.
And not #NextCloud :)
I am currently considering #immich, #photoprism and #photonix.

Any poppositions? And why?

I'm backing everything up to #PhotoPrism on my home server, and then will probably starting using #Flickr more. This article has some good ideas as well for photo backup:

@coldclimate Hey, I'm currently choosing between #immich and #photoprism, what guided your choice?

2025-02-25

In my #selfhosting journey, I was unable to run #librephotos (ok, my own shortcoming), then I opted for #immich. Impressive.
Then I heard about #photoprism. Mh, despite some interesting features compared to Immich, it was much slower, and I had an overall subpar experience on the same machine.
So my choice was Immich.

@jalict Same here!

Only 2% of my whole personal media storage is in my RasPi, the remaining 98% is sitting in many hard disks, totally disordered, patiently waiting to be sorted and cleaned. Soooo much work to do!!!

I wish someone could do an in-depth benchmark and comparison between #Immich and #PhotoPrism! Unfortunately, I don’t have the time and I lack the knowledge and skills to do a proper evaluation.

Just last week I was chatting with @Pitte wondering how much the fact that PhotoPrism is in Go and Immich is in TypeScript affects their actual performance in production. Who knows which one is the lightest?

BTW I personally know the Photoprism team and they are wonderful people, plus the software is great, so I am not planning on switching anytime soon.
