@odd 2/2 The practise of #phytomining is so new, that only in 2025 started the first farming test: web.archive.org/web/2025101015

What works already is phytomining as #phytoremediation to clean soil/water en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytorem The problem is that these plants often become hazardous waste, precisely because there are no affordable methods of extraction on an industrial scale yet.

@odd #Phytomining is nothing new. Unfortunately, this article is very sensationalist. The reality is that such amounts are ridiculous and it would take many years (and millions of money) of research to find adequate extraction methods. The scientists say it clearly: it's only a research to understand the mechanisms.

Often these plants get genetically engineered. And they are always planted in fields, like in agriculture. There is no point in taking a fern out from the forest.

Chinese team finds a fern that makes rare earth elements

phys.org/news/2025-11-chinese-

> Scientists have discovered a fern from South China that naturally forms tiny crystals containing rare earth elements (REEs). This breakthrough opens the door to a promising new way of "green mining" of these minerals called phytomining.

Phytomining uses metal-loving plants like alpine pennycress to extract critical minerals like nickel & cobalt—offering a greener alternative to destructive mining. A niche but promising path for sustainable tech. 🌍🔋 #Phytomining #GreenTech #CriticalMinerals

: Seaweed could be the answer to the critical mineral bottleneck that the future faces, on top of its potential uses for the biofuel and fertilizer markets. Is science getting lost in the weeds, or should we sea where this goes? News Source: cleantechnica.com/2025/05/07/c

Camelina, a friendly li'l brassica is a superhero!
1. It cleans contaminated soils, slurping up nickel--which can then be harvested (phytomining!) for use
2. It improves the soil's fertility
3. Its oil can be used in biofuels.

"We believe that there is currently enough nickel in the barren soil in the U.S. to supply us for 50 years of phytomining,” says [phytoremediation prof] Dhankher.

EN: In a video animation, the program shows how silicon and germanium are absorbed by a corn plant through its roots and stored in its stems.
