My #proxmox box running my fileserver, website, #pihole and #nextcloud has now also died despite being on a UPS. Home tomorrow to investigate.

ok, so my work to get closer to being more 'decentralised' as far as tech goes, gets closer to the end.

* self hosting my family mail including calendaring and contacts
* self hosting files and pictures
* self hosting DNS
* self hosting VPN.

All using opersource of course.

Biggest challenge was setting up the local and offsite backups and making sure that it is all actually recoverable - lots of testing...

So what should i focus on next ? Suggestions ?

Found old Dell Latitude laptop, installed Ubuntu server, and finally got #Pihole running.

#pihole installed on my local #Debian desktop. It never occurred to me until today that I don't actually have to set up (and depend on) a #RasPi for pihole when I could just have it on the machine I'm already using. I just needed to tell my system to use localhost for DNS and I'm done.

@xameer another noob here. I am guessing #pihole is network-wide meaning the action is a one-step affair whereas adblock works inside a browser which means multiple installs of that setup if you have more than one system.

why do I need #pihole when I can use #unbound with adblock?

I thought it would be great to have #PiHole, but accessible from anywhere. And then I came across #AdGuard Home and deployed on my public server. It's open source, all the data stays on the server, it just downloads the filter updates. It has a nice dashboard and from our network it's as fast as #Cloudflare or Google #DNS.

I think I'll give it a shot. 👍

Da war ich die Tage mal im Büro ... da lacht mich im Elektroschrott ein HP ProDesk 600 G3 MT i7-7700 an. Den durfte ich mitnehmen. Aus anderen Kisten 32GB RAM zusammengesucht und zu Hause die alten SSD und Festplattenbestände durchgesehen.

Nun läuft darauf ein Proxmox auf SSD und als Datengrab ein 660GB ZFS raidz (Raid5) Pool - für 0 Euro 😃

Im IDLE verbraucht der unter 15 Watt.
