Australia’s Limestone Coast is drying up
"The once crystal-clear lake now often appears steel-grey or green, its water quality compromised by persistent algae blooms caused by excess nutrients in the water from agricultural runoff and wastewater. Waste from the lake’s thousands of visitors also built up, with some guests reporting seeing human faeces littering its perimeter before a portable toilet was installed in January."
“If we don’t do something about it in the next few years, it rests upon our soul. We really should have spoken up and influenced some people to care for it a bit better rather than just take, take, take.”

Cassowary banishment from tropical forests
Urban sprawl and wildlife translocation
"Only around 4,000 southern cassowaries are thought to remain in Australia, and the species is threatened by habitat destruction, vehicle strikes, dog attacks and climate change."
An "endangered southern cassowary was discovered underweight and with a belly full of tomato seeds and fruits scavenged from compost bins. Several reports indicated the bird had been wandering along roads close to cane fields and was in danger of being hit by a car or truck."

"The experiment begun in 1492 was accompanied by a new relationship with the world and with each other, based on the novel idea that the prosperity of human societies lay in the submission of a wild and free nature to the rational act of exploitation. From then on, the entire living world was put to work, and in this first planetary empire, people, plants and animals became commodities circulating from one corner of the hemisphere to the other."

Koalas face death, attacks and mass starvation from monoculture plantations
Cost-effective management techniques for Australian wildlife
"...Displaced animals were sometimes still up in trees that were felled and ended up with broken bones, or were orphaned babies left behind. Others were attacked by cows or dogs."
"A 2023 study of reported wild koala deaths in south-east Queensland found vehicles were responsible for about half (1,431) of all fatalities."

“There are currently no #CostEffective #management techniques available that would be acceptable to the #community, or clear objectives for the management of #koalas in blue gum #plantations,” — Victorian government Koala strategy, May 2023
Successive State and Federal governments use this excuse to ignore housing the population. Why aren’t you surprised they’d do this to native wildlife. 🐨

Welfare of koalas living in plantations: Aerial and ground-based shooting of koalas
"..The ongoing chronic animal welfare crisis facing koalas in southwest Victoria that has been unfolding for decades. The root cause being rampant habitat loss and the relentless expansion of the blue gum plantation industry. With their natural habitat diminished, koalas are left with nowhere safe to go...Only one animal was rescued and taken into care, while 1,061 were euthanised."

Mass aerial culling of koalas
The mindset of culling everything in this country is a colonial mentality.
"In the weeks leading up to the 2025 Federal Election, the Victorian Labor Government's approval of a barbaric slaughter by helicopter shooters, which killed 1,100 koalas, was comprehensively ignored. Mainstream media failed to report the killing, raising major censorship issues, which need to be addressed."
"I went to one small area of a cleared plantation, with about 30 eucalypts left and around 20 koalas clinging to the branches. This is the scene after harvesting, koalas trying to survive in little pockets of trees."
"There’s no excuse for Australia not to get it right. You can’t treat the environment like this. The mindset of culling everything in this country is a colonial mentality. Wildlife is suffering from our neglect. We have given nothing back to wildlife for all the good things they have done for us."
"Experts have suggested retaining 30% of the plantation blue gums, ensuring corridors for koala movement. The extent of current laws, plans and guidelines in place to protect koalas in Victoria can best be described as completely ineffective, whether they are forests, plantations or urban development habitats."

Australia gunned down 700 koalas from helicopters
"There are calls for an investigation into the events that led to the deaths of 700 koalas in the state of Victoria recently. Australia’s controversial program of euthanising injured and starving koalas from helicopters will continue in the short-term and then be scaled back following a fresh assessment of the program by a vet. "

Sniping koalas from helicopters: here’s what’s wrong with Victoria’s unprecedented cull
"Snipers in helicopters have shot more than 700 koalas in the Budj Bim National Park in western Victoria in recent weeks. It’s believed to be the first time koalas have been culled in this way. The species faces a double threat from habitat destruction and bushfire risk. They are considered endangered in New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory."

🌴📃La quasi-totalité des #plantations d’huile de palme en #Malaisie possède un certificat de #durabilité. Or, ce dernier peut avoir des répercussions négatives, comme le montre une étude soutenue par le FNS.
Koala 'overabundance' - 700 euthanised , some sterilised
The species is often treated like a “pest”.
"When plantations are harvested, all trees are eventually cut down, forcing koalas to move across roads where they're at risk of being struck by cars, or onto private property where they're attacked by dogs, or into national parks where they're already overabundant...The area surrounding Budj Bim has been systematically logged since the 2019/2020 bushfires, likely leaving thousands of koalas homeless...Koalas don’t understand the difference between native forest and a plantation. It’s food. It’s shelter. Without these two things, they die."
