#Bumblebees use their antennae for social interaction within the colony.
Touching antennae with other bees transfers chemical information which allows them to familiarise themselves with the other #bees in the colony.

Inside #bumblebees their straw shaped heart passes through their narrow bee waist (petiole) and what happens to the bee blood (hemolymph) as it passes through this narrow passage is vital to how #bees regulate body temperature!

Bee Circulatory System - quick version!
Tubular heart pulses and waves of contractions push the blood inside the tube towards the head end. Blood at the head slowly forced back to the abdomen to be pushed forward again.

RNA pesticide causing concern in Europe. the manufacturer claims its pesticide has no effect on , butterflies, or mammals, but available data remains very limited. We mustn't make the same disastrous mistakes with genetic we made with chemical onesβ€”says Pollinis, which is fighting to stop the extinction of entrevue.fr/en/societe/un-pest

#bumblebees are actually warm-blooded creatures.
They have the ability to generate heat internally.
This generation of heat is not constant as with mammals but allows them to thrive in colder regions such as Alaska.

Witch hazel is an ideal addition to Takoma yards

Birds, bees, caterpillars and small mammals all benefit when homeowners replace #invasive shrubs such as bush honeysuckle with our #native witch hazel. Learn more about American witch hazels in this blog post from the Friends of Native Trees in Takoma (FONTT).

So dump the nasty and invasive bush honeysuckle and opt for witch hazel instead! #NativePlants #Pollinators

I am working on a rudimentary layout of an apothecary and pollinator garden I'm planning for next spring. I'm choosing plants that I know I enjoy working with when making tinctures, salves, and teas, but also plants that I know will be a good resource for our honey bees and the native pollinators. I'm also choosing plants that will not escape or threaten any of the native flora around us.

On the list so far:
Perennials:
Echinacea
Sage
Thyme
Rosemary
Lavender
Goldenrod
Monarda
Hyssop
Motherwort
Valerian
Skullcap
Marshmallow
Spilanthes
Aster
Red Clover

Annuals:
Chamomile
Calendula
Holy Basil
Sunflower
Buckwheat
Borage

The open areas will be mulched with local wood chips and the fence will be made of T-posts and chicken wire - just enough of a barrier to keep deer from entering.

One really important aspect of this project is to give our honey bees something to forage when other resources are dismal. It will also be a place of beauty we can sit and enjoy observing the pollinators and flowers working together.

a rectangle with the markings of 16' wide and 32' tall; inside the rectangle are numerous bubbles indicating the plant species desired and possible arrangements for planting. Snaking through the garden is a mulched path that will lead from the fence opening to the bottom corner of the garden.

Although not always immediately obvious due to their hairy coats the bumblebee abdomen is actually joined to the thorax by a narrow little tube-like waist.

This waist is called the petiole.

A research paper on visitation rates to flowers on farms revealed this worrying fact:

β€˜The visiting activity of other pollinators (excluding bumblebees/honey #bees) was too low to detect general trends within and between years.’

This pollinator has managed to survive five frosty nights in southern Minnesota. The middle of November is late to be an active Question Mark butterfly. An unripe squash, not pictured, has been gnawed by critters. This is the food source for the solo butterfly. There are habitat benefits to leaving the plants in the nodig garden nearby. #minnesota, #zone4b, #pollinators, #gardening, #compost

We see an orange and brown butterfly on squash vine litter. The wings are open. The orange wings have brown trim with cream dots except the leading edge.

A surprising late fall bloom, and a very happy pollinator. These flowers popped up unexpectedly below a patch of juniper.
