#PorteusKiosk

... but I want to get a solid foundation with @OS1337 that can be used for like a #ThinClient-based #OS similar to #PorteusKiosk which sadly went down the #subscription-only #paywall...

@tux @meshuggahmischell @ubuntu @fdroidorg

As an alternative: github.com/cage-kiosk/cage

Or #porteuskiosk if your use case is simpler.

@the_moep Again: I've not tested / used / installed it yet so I can't formulate an educated opinion beyond: "Will keep it in mind as an option" ...

  • I don't want to discount it, I'm just very wary of recommendations, as those have backfired on me, with #PorteusKiosk currently sadly "#Enshittifying" in a #grsecurity /#RedHat - Style by subsequently #paywalling even the most basic functionality and me having just gotten confirmation that basic functions like "#diskless clients" have been silently axed.

@DarkMetatron Habe selbst sowas deployed - früher #OpenThinclient aber heute würde ich #PorteusKiosk stattdessen deployen...

@robobox well, if a modern #Linux like @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS is too straining consider something like @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabsLinux or #PorteusKiosk or #TinyCore instead?

Personally I'm working on a minimalist #TUI-focussed #toybox + #musl / Linux distro called "OS/1337" with the current goal to make a MVP that fits on a 1440kB 3,5" FDD!

And whilst @OS1337 isn't nearly as close to release-able, I dp recommend the aforementioned #Distros instead as they should allow you to still use even a low-end #T60 configuration productively.

@jackyan @stevendbrewer @Melissabeartrix np.

And for something like a #Library, #PorteusKiosk is an option if one doesn't want to do a complex #OpenThinclient setup instead.

Tho you can also #netboot Porteus Kiosk which is easier to maintain than discontinued #Windows + #SteadyState:

@Melissabeartrix @jackyan @stevendbrewer OFC there are countless options.

Were it not for your mother but like a child, I'd consider pointing at #RaspberryPiOS or for gamers to #pop_OS, for some really old machine I'd point at #BunsenLabsLinux and #TinyCore or for some "Guest Computer" I'd recommend #PorteusKiosk...

  • I stick with #UbuntuLTS for the most part because it's convenient, gets 5 years free updates after release and also has a big, beginner-friendly community and likely gets support by 3rd parties when it comes to commercial software...

But my priorities may not he yours so it's good to have options on the table.

  • #Dayon is just convenient because it doesn't require some central service to be up but just the supporting person to have like a (dynamic) DNS or static IP configured as it acts like a "Reverse-VNC-Server" and is very user-friendly on the "Assisted" side of things by just asking for IP/domain & port to connect to.

@LambdaCalculus @cryptoparty
OFC @vkc did have more than a valid point why she'd not trust @ubuntu and those are all valid...

The good part is that #Linux isn't dependent on the interests of one big Corporation, redardless if #RedHat, #SUSE, #Canonical, #Microsoft, #Google or god forbid #Oracle...

There are mamy options and that is a good thing!

@topher yeah...

Otherwise "dumpster diving" like used #ThinClients that can barely run #Tails / @tails_live and/or @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabs works fine too.

Tho I tend to deploy either #OpenThinclient or #PorteusKiosk for most scenarios that ain't privacy focussed.

2024-02-01

@howtophil @sjmulder Gramted I do ise @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabsLinux on some #ThinClients and if I had to install them somewhere I'd likely use @Raspberry_Pi / #RaspberryPiOS or even #PorteusKiosk depending on the use-case.

OS/1337 aims to go even more minimalist and be a sleek option for those that can acceptbsacrificing features for speed and size.

Certainly it's not for everybody but ideally it'll be the foundation for other distros that want to add the desired comfort features to it.

As of now, #TinyCoreLinux can pack a basic #Xorg desktop under 25MB...

@Natanox @fabiscafe

@necrosis Als @ubuntu / #Ubuntu 22.04 LTS sollte drauf laufen...

Ggf. RAM & SSD upgraden...

Was auf jeden fall läuft ist @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabsLinux und #PorteusKiosk sowie @Raspberry_Pi #RaspberryPiOS...

@nixCraft Yeah...

Jist put on some @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS amd hve a good Desktoo for 5-10+ years amd even lowest-end machines can be repurposed with @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabsLinux or if you want something to just surf on, consider #PorteusKiosk.

Either way, I think #Microsoft should be forced to pay for those >240M PCs they decided to obsolete for no good reason and that this should be accounted for in their #CarbonFootprint as a #Corporation!

...or some old #ThinClients that can't even do @bunsenlabs or #PorteusKiosk but otherwise are still useable as "#FatClients" in the sense of just using a slimmed-down OS to work with.

Also OS/1337 intents to be fully transparent in the sense that it can be used for #CriticalInfrastructure by virtue of being fully-automateable "#BuildFromSource" so on fully #airgapped systems and networks it can be deployed after it went through the ardourous #audit pipeline said users demand.

@kurth granted I do prefer #Live-#Linux - Systems that avoid writes as much as possible and I do intent do enable OS/1337 to support a "boot from RAM" mode where it's copied as #Ramdisk and then started...

Because I do like that feature from @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabs Linux and #PorteusKiosk as it provides a fast-feeling system whilst also yeeting all data afterwards.

Pretty shure @tails_live still wipes RAM manually at shutdown...
