A good turnout today in #PortlandME!

Hundreds gather in Portland to protest actions by #ICE

The demonstration came at the end of a week in which federal immigration officials said over 100 people had been detained in #Maine.

by Drew Johnson, January 23, 2026

PORTLAND — "While the temperature dropped, emotions remained high as hundreds of protesters took to Monument Square on Friday night after a week in which federal immigration officials said they had detained over 100 people in Maine.

"Small demonstrations have been held throughout the week — in Portland and beyond — but Friday night’s appeared to be the first to attract such numbers since U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement began a large-scale operation this week.

" 'No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here,' protesters chanted as a symphony of car horns blared on Congress Street shortly after the protest began at 5 p.m.

"Protesters began marching down Congress Street around 6 p.m., chanting 'No justice, no peace, get ICE off our streets; to the steady beat of drums."

Did some patrolling around #PortlandME today. Lots of business have Anti-ICE signs which state that they consider them trespassers and will call the local police. Good! I had my phone and whistle, but didn't see any masked asshats. Had a nice chat with an unhoused fella who hangs out near the bar that I DJ at (and I slipped some money to him after our chat). A lot of the regulars know me, and know that I always have an ear to hear their stories, even if I don't always remember to carry cash for them. Anyhow, the streets were unusually empty -- especially empty of POC. I don't like that my former stomping grounds is being terrorized. And #JaredGolden giving more money to these terrorists (naively thinking they can be reined in) is beyond disgusting! I didn't see anyone out protesting (I know there was a rally planned for 5pm), so I decided to head home before the snow squalls blew in (they started just as I got home). Kudos to the hearty souls who are out there braving the cold tonight -- whether they are protesting, homeless, or just trying to earn a living under a #FascistRegime -- my heart goes out to them!

#PortlandME unlikely to change winter shelter threshold amid staffing, funding limits

The winter shelter opens when the daily low temperature drops to 15 degrees or below, or if the city gets more than 10 inches of snow.

Author: Katie Delaney
Published: 2:12 PM EST January 14, 2026
Updated: 2:12 PM EST January 14, 2026

PORTLAND, Maine — "The city of Portland likely won’t be changing the criteria to open its winter warming shelter this season.

"Right now, the shelter opens when the daily low temperature drops to 15 degrees or below, or if the city gets more than 10 inches of snow.

City officials met to discuss the threshold and the possibility of making changes to it at a Health & Human Services & Public Safety Committee meeting Tuesday night.

"Despite some recent criticism about the temperature threshold, city leaders who spoke at the meeting said making changes to when the shelter is open this season does not seem feasible.

"This is the first year the city has operated a winter warming shelter. According to Maggie McLoughlin, Portland’s Director of Health & Human Services, it costs about $7,700 a night to operate the shelter. Most of that cost is from staffing.

"With that cost, the shelter has enough funding to be open for 50 nights this winter. It has been open for 12 nights so far.

"McLoughlin said if the city changed the temperature threshold even by just a few degrees, it would make a big difference. If the threshold went up to 20 degrees instead of 15, for example, she said the shelter would be open for an extra 14 to 21 nights, adding an extra $108,000 to $201,000 dollars.

That would take more staff, too—something McLoughlin said is already limited. Last month the shelter was closed for a weekend, despite meeting the temperature threshold, because of a lack of staff."

#PortlandME - #JazzAtTheMovies film series

"#WMPG’s Jazz At The Movies team are pleased to present our first film of the 2026 season, the documentary 'Music Pictures: #NewOrleans'.

"Beautifully shot and recorded, the film is a loving portrait of four Crescent City jazz, soul, and blues legends, and a celebration of 100 years of New Orleans musical history.

"Directed by New Orleans native filmmaker #BenChace, 'Music Pictures: New Orleans' is a vibrant documentary exploring the rich musical heritage of New Orleans. It showcases the city’s diverse musical landscape, from legendary #JazzClubs to lively street performances, highlighting the influences of #Creole, #AfricanAmerican, and #French cultures, and how historical events, like #MardiGras and #HurricaneKatrina, have shaped the city’s music scene. Through interviews with local musicians and historians, Music Pictures: New Orleans reveals music’s central role in the city’s cultural and social fabric.

"The film showcases four New Orleans music legends: Grammy-winning #IrmaThomas 'The Soul Queen of New Orleans' ; #BennyJonesSr., the leader and drummer of the world renowned #TremeBrassBand; guitarist #LittleFreddieKing, the 'Last King of the Blues'; and the pianist and educator, #EllisMarsalisJr., patriarch of the famed jazz family, in what would be his last concert before his death. Music Pictures: New Orleans follows each of the four artists, one by one, as they talk about their lives, rehearse, and record a new album in the studio in early 2020s. By combining vintage footage with live interviews and rare backstage access, this film provides a wonderful snapshot of New Orleans as the home for so much great American music, from #soul to #BrassBand to jazz and #TheBlues. What better way to get ready for the Mardi Gras season!"

"Embracing the oft-repeated slogan that 'paint is cheap,' transportation planners across the U.S. — particularly in midsize cities — have been turning their unidirectional streets back to multidirectional ones. They view the step as one of the easiest ways to improve safety and make downtowns more alluring to shoppers, restaurant patrons and would-be residents." #portlandme bostonglobe.com/2026/01/17/bus

I was out and about posting #KYR flyers in multiple languages at all the #Hilal and #African markets in #PortlandME a year ago! I've been on top of this #ICE BS before it started! I'm so glad to see folks taking this shit seriously, but sometimes I wonder why so many stayed home rather than making sure a FUCKING #Fascist didn't win in 2024. Just saying... Yeah, I don't mean to #VoteShame folks, but I am #VoteShaming folks! Seriously!!! WTF! This is better than #CorporateDemocrats? Ummmm...
