back in the 90s, the era of 8/16bit home computers, it was rare treat to experience software that made your computer feel like a supercomputer

the (originally freeware) raytracing software POVRAY was definitely one of those

it was available for a number of platforms eg Amiga, PC and Acorn Archimedes

the scene description language was very powerful, able to programmatically define scenes with eg loops

@sergio_101 @stu I use #povray semi-regularly, e.g. to convert .STL to depth maps and to render more shiny LaTeX-beamer presentations.

I would love to find that there is still an active community for #PovRay, because i loved that so much.

@Gaziel : Totalement, #Povray ne tourne que sur le #CPU, il ne peut pas utiliser le #GPU.
Et c'est un troll récurent :

I have been using tau in my #PovRay animations for years and it's so much easier to figure out where I am in a rotation because of it.

Last week I found one of my 3D renders from when I was a teenager, posted by an account that reposts “old school 3D”… which sure did also make *me* feel old.

But it did inspire me to dig out some old files, install POV-Ray and start making some abstracts. I still find procedural raytracing a lot of fun because it appeals to the programming side of me. I think I’ll probably get back into this again.

Only a bit of the syntax has changed, too.

A 3D rendering made with raytracing, utilising radiosity and photons, of a series of reflective grey spheres and mirrored orange glass spheres, arranged in an offset grid pattern.  A bright red accent reflects on some of them on the left side.

13 hours into an animation render barely 2/3rds done and I check the frames. That's not what I wanted to render! I was hoping to get some other project started, so I guess I can now.
