🎩🎓 Another legend passes, and the only thing this "news" site can muster is a word salad of college rankings and privacy policies. R.I.P. George E. Smith, apparently the only thing less relevant here than UniversityCube's endless lists. 📜🔍

🔥📚 "Ambitious" research in the modern era boiled down to a YouTube video - because nothing says groundbreaking innovation quite like buffering ads and autoplay rabbit holes. 😂🔍 Apparently, the secret to success involves navigating privacy policies and testing new features from the comfort of your couch. 🛋️🎥

The case for open source software is clear. The software generated is more robust, has better features and keeps evolving unconstrained by budgetary concerns.

That is why open source software is the better choice when it comes to keeping your data private. Whilst the code of the privacy tool may be open, the data is secure - and everyone can verify that in the code. 🔒

Once your data is out there, you can’t take it back. 🔓

AI, facial recognition, and predictive analytics don’t just track you - they anticipate your behavior.

What happens when algorithms decide your credit, your job, or your freedom?

We need laws, but until then, we need awareness. Privacy is your first line of defense.

As of recent my new friend @shannonpersists and I have been playing around with different E2EE apps on Android.

Also been getting my knowledge of #PrivacyPolicies which is where you feel out what each app collects on you while using it.

Thanks to my new amazing friend I now know how to read a policy.

Hmm, this seems to be a moment where the #fediverse's growing movement of #PrivacyPolicies and individual #UserPrivacyPolicy's curtailed Grok.

This is just basic foreshadowing about the death of xAI's latest folly I.T. sounds like as a stolen lyric was used for the above statement from a song, obvs.

@craignewmark @tchambers thanks for posting that excellent article on #PrivacyPolicies.

I was a little disappointed that they didn't mention [Terms of Service; Didn't Read]( tosdr.org/en/frontpage ). With all that research that the authors did, they could probably have contributed a lot... Then I realized, #PrivacyPolicy and #TermsOfService are not the same thing 🤦

Even though TOSDR mentions privacy frequently, I could not find it in their about page.

#Privacy #PrivacyPolicies #DataProtection: "Privacy policies are horrible. They are too long, impenetrable, and full of legalese that amounts to a take it or leave it offer. But the privacy policy is one of the only places where tech companies have to tell us the truth—the truth about what personal data they are collecting, how they share and profit from that data, and at a deeper level, what sort of trade we’re making when we choose to use their apps or platforms.

They follow a predictable structure, meaning you can learn to navigate them, spotting key sections and passages from a safe skimming height, swooping down only to extract the juiciest morsels of information or to leverage an opportunity to opt out of certain collection (or to opt in to deeper, more personalized disclosure).

We can teach you how to do that. Drawing from our shared experience—Jon as a reporter who has read hundreds of these documents in the course of his reporting, and Jesse, an intern with us who also happens to be an attorney who has helped write dozens of privacy policies himself—we have some tips we want to share with you about what to look out for. We also asked some privacy experts to weigh in and share their advice with our readers."

Imagine if a law forced companies to make sure we *actually* read and understood their #termsOfUse and #privacyPolicies.

Like for example, you have to answers some questions about the some details in the document before you can create your account.

Or you can't click I Agree before a reasonable time has passed, and the longer the document, the longer that duration!

FACIAL RECOGNITION WARNING:-

Some #shops in #Australia have started using #facialRecognition and they only tell visitors with a little note somewhere near the entance and hidden in their website #privacyPolicies.

Offending stores to #boycott are:
👎 #BunningsWarehouse (website is #cloudFlare too so no loss there),
👎 #KMart (website gives data to #ScAmazon), and
👎#electronics retailer #TheGoodGuys (website is Microsoft-partnered #Akamai, so avoid anyway).

“There are so many aspects of how #techcompanies deal with the public that obfuscates what actually goes on and so many attempts to placate people using jargon.. I’ve spoken to lawyers who write #privacypolicies who admit—they admit—that they aren’t written for the public.

The findings are particularly notable as companies and marketers argue that individuals should be responsible for understanding and navigating all of these policies and their #privacy settings."
