#ProceduralArtwork

2025-01-24

I've felt overwhelmed by what's happened this week, and unable to create anything worthwhile for Genuary, so here is a #ProceduralArtwork from last fall. I created this system based on #Genuary2024 #Genuary11, "In the style of Anni Albers". I had collected some of her works in advance of it, and then got Covid. I finally made something based on my favorite piece of hers, shown below. I titled this system "Pea Field Quilt" as it is inspired by farming and farm traditions of my home of Minnesota.

Second Movement V (1978), By Anni Albers

A large piece of paper, with an aquatint etching in the middle. It is a square, geometric construction composed of triangles and parallelograms in a grid. The basic structure of the square grid involves dividing each square into two right triangles, with one being filled with black. The angle of the division is different for each quadrant, such that they are parallel to the dividing lines of the central diamond. The central diamond shape has a different fill color, a pale olive. The central diamond also has a chance that each triangle will be rotated 90 degrees, which can form a parallelogram with the adjacent square. But nowhere are more than two triangles combined. The ring around the central diamond has a chance of being rotated, but is still black, so it leaves a seemingly randomly scattered boundary, but there are never too large of gaps, due to the underlying rule.Pea-Field-Quilt-1157895-5760F
In my system, it has a similar basic structure, but I did not bother to work out the rule to avoid longer parallelograms. It would have been very difficult, and I actually preferred how it looked this way, as it gives a greater variety. The hue and saturation vary by random walks as they are added. The central diamond has the hue offset by 50% of the spectrum, to create a complementary color set. To make it more my own, and to follow more threads I had explored in the work I made just prior to this, Interstitial Audacity, I added some circles, one per small square. They either stay in the colored triangles as an area of slightly lighter color, or they can randomly pop out into the white triangle, and match the color of the source triangle.Pea-Field-Quilt-3698315-7200F
This one has some very vibrant and very desaturated portions, with some more distinct banding. It feels very dynamic and warming.Diamond-Triangle-Circle-Square-Quilt-1898288-5760F45
This was the placeholder title until I could come up with something better. I experimented with rotating it 45 degrees like some Mondrian works. The simple mat and frame is generated in the p5.js sketch. I like the feeling this one gives. Tranquil, ordered, yet organic feeling. You can see that the page and mat are not quite pure white.
