Too many people forget that criminal defense attorneys, especially public defenders, are good people who are willing to stand up to injustice and give their clients the best representation possible even when they are guilty.
The #PublicDefenders job is to defend, because no decent society would permit the government to imprison anyone without proving his or her guilt. These lawyers are absolutely essential to the so-called "justice" system. I think more people should recognize that.
A rigorous study by the American Bar Association which found that Oregon has 31% percent of the Public Defenders it needs has been overruled by a DA Clique's vibes-based assessment.

Many had ties to the #FederalistSociety, a *#conservative* #legal group. #Biden’s appointees have been 63% #female & 61% #nonwhite. He has prioritized nominees who served as #PublicDefenders & #CivilRights lawyers, & his picks have tended to be more #liberal than those of past Democratic presidents.

Administrative Office of the US Federal Courts takes a surplus in the public defender's budget, allocates it to itself rather than public defense, which is now resulting in potential layoffs of hundreds of federal public defenders.
Congress can and should stop this in the budget process.
This is a good example of why the 2017 Cardone report (link in article) recommended more independence from the judiciary for defender offices.

If they are low on cash, the local public defender is always there to serve them. Unless, that is, someone successfully defunded the PD’s office, but we don’t know any Republicans who would want to do that.
Every defendant, even if indigent like the Jan 6 masterminds, deserves a qualified defense lawyer.

Smart combative WOMEN are over-represented among #PublicDefenders, because of course they are: it's a lower-status high-workload job that takes a lot of #EmotionalIntelligence and #empathy, and the pay is well below average for people with the necessary skills, training, and credentials.
