Immigrants make America great — and most every welcoming country, for that matter. Smart immigration policies matters, not dog whistles and cruelty. Unfortunately, smart federal policy is not what this regime offers.

Suing the European Commission because of an agreement giving the European Parliament, a body directly elected by EU citizens, more powers and equal treatment in legislative process is against democratic values.

The European Parliament, in fact, should have more powers and stronger position in lawmaking. This would increase the trust within the EU as the public prefers elected representatives to have more say. Moreover, more transparent lawmaking process and increased role of the EP regarding international agreements is another positive development.

Healthy democracy requires balance of powers and prerogatives as well as taking steps to strengthen public trust in EU institutions. politico.eu/article/eu-countri

Image shows young couple considering their bills in a domestic kitchen setting with the headline ‘Falling fertility rates’. Article introduction text reads: When data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) confirmed a continued fall in fertility rates across England and Wales, CPC and CG members were called upon to provide expert comment.

The ONS Births in England and Wales: 2024 release reported a total fertility rate (TFR) of 1.41 children per woman, a marginal drop from 1.42 in 2023. This is the lowest figure on record for the third year running. While most regions saw further decline, the West Midlands and London recorded slight increases, the first since 2021, with TFRs rising to 1.59 and 1.35 respectively.

The release also showed that the standardised mean age at childbirth rose again in 2024, reaching 31.0 for mothers and 33.9 for fathers. London had the highest average maternal age at 32.5. The sharpest decline in age-specific fertility was among 25 to 29-year-olds...

One thing that all modern governments seem to forget is that bureaucracy and enforcement are not free. The amount of money spent to prevent "theft" often hugely outweighs the amount that would be lost if they were left alone.

Example: local councils in Australia which offer free gas barbecues in local parks rather than making people pay for using them. Savings were huge, mainly because vandalism of the barbeques dropped to practically zero. It also made the barbecues themselves cheaper, since there was no need to add a pay mechanism to them.

Negative example: the #NDIS in Australia has been hobbled by so many bureaurcratic hurdles added to "prevent rorting" and dealing with "budget overruns" that it is fair to say that the entire purpose of that department is now to prevent anyone getting any money out of it at all. And of course the budget overruns haven't been addressed, because all the money is being spent on needless tests and recertifications and endless red tape.

Lets Rethink Housing: Right — so what would this actually look like in practice?
We’ve talked about incentives.

So what would a real alternative actually look like?

Not theory.
Not slogans.
Just something that could work.

Lets Rethink Housing: People use housing as an investment — could we find a better alternative?

Does investing really need to mean owning the thing itself?

We don’t do that with roads or power.
So why housing?
