Why Can’t Everyone Catch the Train in Melbourne?
Why Can’t Everyone Catch the Train in Melbourne?
@partim is this project going to become part of the https://erpu.eu/ project? 🙂
But whatever your plans are -- everybody using #publictransport or #rail and in particular of course #railsBorderRail will probably love this as it can add quite some flexibility to travel planning. After all, impromptu is what you need to recover from missed connections and any other common mishaps 🙂

Good news for disabled and senior citizens!
The government announces a continuation of free bus passes for those over 60 and people with disabilities in England. #PublicTransport #Accessibility

@koeln What's the current state? The money could be used to make #cologne more climate positive and focus on #solidarity. #Renewablepublicenergy, working accessible #publictransport, #housingfirst, #spongecity concept, more greenery, green housing facades, carless inner city. I mean cologne could use the saved money for a lot of things. Or is the #administration already off the hook of Microsoft?

If you had been on the train, you'd be at work by now

I'm taking a ferry today.
It's a twice a day service and it's pretty much empty going out of the city.
A return trip is $42, it takes about an hour and saves an hour or so compared to the train+bus (but costs 4x the price) and takes you to a small town with a population of only 4436.
It was originally put forward as a commuter ferry, but it seems like more of a tourist thing even though Port Arlington isn't much of a tourist destination.
It's run by a private company that is being heavily subsidised by the state government. I assume it was some kind of property scam or some wealthy people wanting to avoid car traffic but also not go on the crowded train like the 'poors'.
This article from 2023 reckons the government puts in $2.55 million a year to run the ferries with apparently 100,000 passenger trips (which is 400 commuters)

$8/day is probably still a bargain to get a car out of peak hour traffic.
I enjoy the ferry for the novelty but it's very silly.
@treleanor MyWay+ is not great. But this issue is not related to it.
This was the end result of extensive traffic modelling over months by Transport Canberra. I have seen heat maps of Canberra's road network regarding the bridge closure, which is high confidential. The maps showed it was going to be really painful on the roads.
TC already created multiple networks for testing in the model. As in they have scrapped multiple network proposals.
Age article on metro tunnel. I can remember going to work on the train in the city loop when it opened. At times I would have the whole carriage to myself. You cannot judge this stuff when it opens. It takes time for numbers to build up. (Also: stop replacing level crossings. You have done enough and it’s getting silly) #melbourne #publictransport
Transport minister Lord Hendy doesn't understand transport
"On some occasions (cycle lane) design has reduced bus service speeds, with a detrimental effect on overall journey times.”
Cycle lanes are not the main cause of bus delays given congestion on the city’s roads and other impacts on journey speeds such as road works.

The state government is now collecting the fares instead of the operators and paying the operator a fixed fee instead of the operating getting the fare revenue. Classic failing public-private partnerships.
German rail punctuality stuck at little above 50% in November
The goal is to complete the #ZarazJade refactor by its 7th anniversary. The deadline is January 29th! 🎯
The third approach must succeed! 💪

"The Council is working on a business case for investment in new trains which could be a combination of electric and battery, and this will be submitted to the government later in 2024. If successful, we will need to place an order in either 2025 or 2026. Again, it is important that Te Huia continues to attract more people to use the service, so that the best possible case can be made for new trains."

Well this is a little disappointing:

Free travel on Friday and Saturday evenings is fine (though I wonder about take-up from the outer suburbs where you might want to set off before 6 if you're travelling by bus), but all day Friday gave a bit of incentive to leave the car at home. I would have preferred for it to be made permanent.
