3. @washingtonpost story says woman shooting 2 soldiers was "first time a female combat fighter from an Islamist group has been seen in Somalia".

This is only true if suicide bombers don't count. Though rare, women have acted as suicide bombers for #AlShabaab several times before.

The title of the @washingtonpost story, "The Islamic State has regrouped in Somalia — and has global ambitions" is also strikingly off-base, since journalist Katharine Houreld is in fact reporting on the group's dramatic retreat in face of offensive by #Puntland state forces.

Beyond #Somaliland and #Puntland, #Ethiopia had a ready made leverage in #Jubaland and Southwest. Those Somali regions, more neglected than the central regions in the war on #AlShabaab, are heavily reliant on Ethiopian troops. They are also opposed to the constitutional reform, although not on principle, like Puntland, but - on the face of it - to avoid any term extension.

Hassan Sheikh's decision to rush the constitutional reform before local, parliamentary and regional elections to be held in 2025 and presidential elections in 2026 had unsurprising consequences. #Puntland, which had boycotted the consultations since their onset, has "seceded" in April 2024. The region, at the moment, refuses to recognize the federal government in Mogadiscio and temporarily functions as an independent state.

That particular crisis was resolved by resorting to the older indirect system, an autocoup as it were, since the vote occured while the parliament was occupied by Deni's #Puntland Maritime Police Force ( #PMPF ).

OPOV has been a major argument of #Somaliland to garner international support for recognition, along with peaceful transfer of power, as last witnessed on 13 Nov 2024.

Another political crisis had also been brewing in #Puntland, #Somalia 's oldest autonomous region, which founding (1998) preceded the current federal state, as a result of a pushback against the introduction of the OPOV system before the reelection of its president Said Abdullahi Deni.
