First #blog for December is a #review of Lavanya Lakshminarayan's The Ten Percent Thief, which I'd picked up at WorldCon last year. It is a truly excellent satire of late stage capitalism and the idea of meritocracy (among other things). It's decentralised form brilliantly matches its substantive critique.

I had some minor critiques, but nothing to detract from the its overall excellence. I recommend this to everyone who enjoys #SF #cyberpunk or #dystopian fiction.

Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson is the grandfather of all modern webcomics.

Like, I want to let that stand alone, but to clarify: he pushed the boundaries of what the "funny pages" could be, both physically and narratively.

He played with different art styles, and color, and panel layout, in ways that are hard to pull off today unless you have full control of the page -- like you do on a website.

He used character drama to set up jokes and he used jokes to set up story beats. Characters don't get into the same trouble every week for eternity, they learn a little and then get into *new* types of trouble, up until Watterson said "right, that's a good place to call it", and he gave them all *endings*. Because you can be funny but still have a beginning, middle, and end.

Without that, I don't think we'd have Sabrina Online, or Ozy and Millie, or Freefall, or Questionable Content, or Shortpacked!, or even Penny Arcade, and without that we wouldn't have PAX, or quite possibly Homestuck, and without Homestuck we probably wouldn't have Deltarune or The Amazing Digital Circus.

Long live the Funny Pages.
