I read an article on #RNZ this evening about old timey NZ-made radios.

That led me to https://www.vintageradio.co.nz/, a great old-school website that collates all the info on NZ's old radios.

It's of interest to me as I still have my now-deceased Great Aunt's old valve radio, pictured below with my young daughter back in 2010. It still works (AM only) and I love it.

My Great Aunt Lill was crippled by polio when she was young and lived a simple, frugal life with limited mobility in leg braces.

I tracked down her model on the vintageradio website. Based on the scan of the old advertisement for this Murphy G202 radio, it sold in NZ for￡69. "LUXURY ... at low cost!" to quote the ad.

I just did an inflation adjustment to today's dollars on the Reserve Bank website, and ￡69 in 1957, when this radio was made, would be $4,400 today!

Now I'm wondering how the family got the money together to buy her this.

Radios were a big investment for the home back then. They were different times.
