#Stuff: "General Practicioners will soon be able to diagnose ADHD"
#RNZ: "#GPs will soon be allowed to diagnose #ADHD"

BIG difference. Being able and allowed are two very different things.

I read an article on #RNZ this evening about old timey NZ-made radios.

rnz.co.nz/life/culture/the-inn

That led me to vintageradio.co.nz/, a great old-school website that collates all the info on NZ's old radios.

It's of interest to me as I still have my now-deceased Great Aunt's old valve radio, pictured below with my young daughter back in 2010. It still works (AM only) and I love it.

My Great Aunt Lill was crippled by polio when she was young and lived a simple, frugal life with limited mobility in leg braces.

I tracked down her model on the vintageradio website. Based on the scan of the old advertisement for this Murphy G202 radio, it sold in NZ for£69. "LUXURY ... at low cost!" to quote the ad.

I just did an inflation adjustment to today's dollars on the Reserve Bank website, and £69 in 1957, when this radio was made, would be $4,400 today!

Now I'm wondering how the family got the money together to buy her this.

Radios were a big investment for the home back then. They were different times.

A photo of 2-year old child in pajamas sucking on a pacifier sitting in a little yellow chair turning the knobs on an old wooden valve radio that's much bigger than she is.A scan of a 1957 advertisement for a NZ-made valve-radio ("radiogram"). The Murphy G202 was manufactured for Fisher & Paykel Ltd by Allied Industries Ltd (Fisher & Paykel) in 1957.

The ad starts with these details:

Here is a famous name radiogram that is outstanding in every way — outstanding in appearence! Outstanding in performance!
Outstanding in value!

The Murphy Melodist (as illustrated) is undoubtedly the best buy in Radiograms of comparable quality available in New Zeoland to-doy! Its high quality of tone ond exceptional power puts it in a class far above its modest price.

"In references how in the past, major drug seizures would have a clear impact on consumption. That's no longer the case. According to the National Drug Intelligence Bureau, there was a 96% increase, in 2024, of the minimum annual consumption of methamphetamine compared to 2023."

Listening to Guyon Espiner's interview with CLuxon. He starts off sounding a tad more human than he did with Jack Tame, but the chatbot-speak kicks in about 5 minutes in;

"But what we are doing, is we have refreshed all of our Defence leadership, from heads of the Forces, through the Chief, through the Defence Secretary, through to the Minister, obviously. And I've asked them for a new strategy on our defence strategy."

If the RNZ piece the other day about Alex the teenager who died alone in a motel from his eating disorder made you want to smash your radio, here is an antidote. Heartbreaking but, but the kind of reporting he deserves.

"Liam Dann ... in the [NZ] Herald admits the toughness of the times ... but also cites the need for confident spending to help NZ out of the doldrums. Actually, he says, go and buy that new jacket you know it looks good."

So ... if people's spending is what helps the economy recover, boosting incomes and therefore tax revenue, why has this government been cutting spending that puts money on the pockets of the people most likely to spend it?
