Scholarship eligibility will be determined by our commitment to prioritising and maximising inclusion and participation for individuals impacted by the cumulative effects of discrimination—across dimensions such as race, gender, disability, gender identity, financial status and their intersections. Accessibility micro-grant eligibility follows the same guiding principles, and is open to participants based in Asia and Australia.

It’s a great opportunity to present your work in research software, remotely and at low cost, all in an Asian/Australian-friendly timezone.

The conference runs entirely online, across three half-days in the afternoons (Melbourne time). There’ll be talks, workshops, and a dedicated community-focused third day.

The maximum registration fee is $30 AUD, but lots of free tickets will be available to keep things accessible. Would love to see you there or feel free to pass it on to others who might be interested!

For centuries, we had public infrastructure for texts (called "libraries").
Recently, this has been extended to data (called "repositories").

We need to extend that to some software, developed and maintained as a free public good.
Why? Because we need it for a functioning society.

Smart societies would sustainably fund some open source software as critical infrastructure.
For example, research grants could set aside 2 % of their budget to support the open-source software they rely on.

Dr Minh Bui, co-developer of the globally-used phylogenetics software IQ-TREE2 and winner of the inaugural ARDC Eureka Prize for Excellence in Research Software, will be delivering the #RSAA25 keynote!

Together with Professor Robert Lanfear (Australian National University), Dr Bui developed IQ-TREE2 – an open-source tool turning DNA data into evolutionary insights. It has been used to study everything from the origins of life to the spread of COVID-19.

After having a chat with some conference organisers, I've got a little bit more nuance to how I'll approach it.

1. Send an email early in the process to the organisers.

2. In the email, highlight the reasons for my limited ability to physically attend.

3. In the email, provide the abstract of my talk so that I'm potentially raising the profile of my work.

4. In special circumstances I might even offer to volunteer for the conference.

I was thinking of submitting abstracts for conferences that I can't physically go to and/or are too expensive to justify going as a remote participant.

That way, people will at least get to read about my work and if there is enough interest, maybe they might be more willing to negotiate how I could attend.
