How we did PCBs back in the '80s. That is, the nice ones, the presentable. For the rest, multiple passes with a permanent marker was enough.

No, China wasn't making them for us, they had just come out of their Cultural Revolution and had Deng Xiaoping applying his reform policies and trying to limit China's population growth with the "one-child-policy".

The only technological China we knew back then was Taiwan.

Blasts from the past!

I just found my *TRS-80 Model 100 Portable Computer* (to give it its full name) in a box while attempting to do some de-cluttering. I thought I'd lost this computer in one of my many moves. I did quite a bit of my PhD (writing mostly but also some coding and, of course, connecting to the university systems via its built-in 300 baud modem) using this wee computer. I have some fond memories of using this computer.

Must find some AA batteries and see if it still works. No reason why it shouldn't?

I also found my first "proper" laptop, a Toshiba T1000SE. I used to use this in my 1 hour each way daily rail commute to work in Scotland.

I wonder what else I'll find?

Question now: what do I do with these computers? Suggestions welcome!

@dallin Hi there, I hope the repair shop will be able to bring the tape deck back to life. At my mother's home, there is an old System 650 from #radioshack. It's manufactured by Pioneer and as it seems to me it has some contacts that touch top side of the cassette. They are there to determine whether it's a Chrome tape, Metal, Normal etc. It seems to me that these contacts also detect presence of the tape. The deck wont start without a tape inside. Unfortunately the tape deck of the system 650 is also dead... I suspect those contacts. But I'm not strong in electronics neither...

A level of documentation thoroughness which is extraordinary to our eyes these days. The binder includes reproductions of IC datasheets, comprehensive operating system, register, ROM, I/O and hardware docs, including timing diagrams. #retrocomputing #trs80 #radioshack

Found my old #RadioShack 22-810 multimeter during a recent garage cleanout.

Hardly used, because although a great size for a travel meter, it uses A23 batteries that you're not going to be able to find locally without a Radio Shack on every corner.

wow wow wow

During another round of crap consolidation in my office/studio the other day I unearthed this #RadioShack 274-016c, which is a passive Lo-Z to Hi-Z impedance transformer; basically a super-basic mic reamp stuffed into an adapter

I would have bought this right after GarageBand was first released, when I was didn't really know anything about anything and was also fighting with a mic that either never worked correctly and/or was not meant to work with the gear I had at my disposal

A chunky adapter with a male XLR connector on one end and a male TRS phono connector on the other. It is labeled "RadioShack 274-016C"

Remember the CueCat? Here's an unopened PS2 version. When these things came out I went to every Radio Shack in the area to get one. Things didn't work out for them the way they wanted them to.

Mashable: Internet marketer Tai Lopez bought RadioShack. Now he’s being sued for using it in a Ponzi scheme.. “RadioShack. Modell’s Sporting Goods. Pier 1 Imports. Dress Barn. Linens ‘n Things.
