#Interrail day 6/7b: to #Aberdeen I chose reservation-free trains. The #RailPlanner app signed the following #LNER connection as not reservation-free, but when I wanted to make the reservation at #RailEurope they said it’s free (and thus wouldn’t sell). LNER‘s chatbot also stated that a reservation is not mandatory so I just entered the #train and found the best places you can get 😊

The only green / unreserved seats were the four on the right and the last one on the left in the coach for disabled people, directly at the kitchen’s door 😋The menu for complementary food in first classThe menu for complementary drinks in first classWhere to put your (non-folding) bike, reservation mandatory

Poland’s launching a direct Warsaw–Croatia train for under €50! 🚄 No flights, no buses-just epic views, more comfort, and way less CO₂. Europe needs more bullet trains like Japan’s Shinkansen. Let’s make travel better (and greener)! 🌍✨

Making an #Interrail reservation on #Raileurope, the last step before payment gives you a seat number which you can then check on the seat map on that #SNCF hellsite. Removing the reservation from the cart on Raileurope you can see the seat become free again on SNCF Infect. Wondering how many browser tabs are needed to block the seats I don't want before trying again... 🤔

duckduckfedi:

It seems I encountered my first disadvantage using an #interrail pass from #allaboard. #Italiarail only accepts passholder numbers beginning with „EU“ or „IN“ while my allaboard pass starts with „AA“.
Not a big disadvantage though, as #raileurope is cheaper anyway…

I want to complain to #raileurope's data protection officer (I was using them because recommended by #seat61) but their webshite doesn't give me any way of contacting them. Not even a paper address! Just a useless chatbot
Does anyone have a backchannel?
Otherwise I will have to look up their details in Companies House or something.

@freakonometrics #RailEurope seems quite good (just trying to find out as well which is the best website to find #train solutions in #Europe): raileurope.com

@pony @jon #RailEurope is a tourist trap IIRC. Back when the site was openly accessible (before they entered Cloudflare’s exclusive walled garden), their packages & pricing seemed to target those who wanted flexibility at any price. I don’t recall ever seeing a good deal there.

@jon I didn’t know trip.com had train schedules (thanks for mentioning it!) But it’s useless for me -- it reports no trips found when searching quite typical city pairs (Brussels→Paris & Brussels→Amsterdam). Perhaps some underlying javascript is trying to connect to a Tor-hostile resource.

#AllAboard is the same kind of disaster as #RailEurope: Cloudflare configured to be exclusive.

@vanecx @jon It’s easy to nit-pick the flaws of those services like pricing inconsistencies. I have actually quit taking the train because #Raileurope joined Cloudflare’s exclusive walled garden and #Trainline now directly blocks Tor users with a 403. Although they are private companies, collectively they are gatekeepers to a public service.
