Was emptying and cleaning some #RainBarrels today, as they were empty enough to require tipping them over to get the very last of it...

Had not really rained much at all in sunny #Portland for two, maybe three months...

Several are over half-full now after a short but fairly heavy rain this evening!

This probably means... no need to use water from public utilities for watering the garden this entire year!

All the various barrels hold about 2 kiloliters of water or so at full capacity...

‘Unprecedented’ demand for rain barrels in Calgary leads to shortage
When demand rains, it pours. Possible summer water restrictions had Calgarians waking up early Saturday in hopes of buying a hard-to-find rain barrel.

#rainbarrels are rad and all but for those of us who aren't homeowners, showering with your friends is where it's at to #savewater.

Finally installed my rain barrel! (Many thanks to my partner for painting it.) Not gonna get a tonne out of it just because of my region, but every bit counts! Now to convince my landlord to let us set up a greywater system... 😅🤔

SO one of my many fall projects was to add to our existing rain catchment system. The existing setup had a capacity of nearly 1000 gallons. I procured 4 275 gallon IBC that will double my existing capacity. The IBC's were food grade and were about $160 each delivered. Way more economical than commercially available rain barrels. They are a bit ugly but will serve my garden well. I will use a transfer pump to move the water from the system near the house to these in the garden. My existing system can fill up with one big storm so the extra capacity will be awesome #rain #rainbarrels #garden #sustainable #gardening #rainharvesting

For those of you with #RainBarrels - how do you get the water from your downspout into your barrel? Which diverter do you like?

I did 30 hours of research and ended up getting this EarthMinded FlexiFit diverter
earthmindedrainbarrels.com/Ear

(no affiliation, it just works well for me)

I like this one because:

* You only need to cut one small hole in the side of your downspout
* You do *not* need to sever the entire downspout
* The diverter fits many sizes
* It automatically handles overflow, so you don't need to do anything when the barrel is full
* The water barrel system stays closed. Fewer mosquitos/algae/critters

I used this to set up rain collection that captured 2,500 gallons / 9,400 Litres of free, clean rain water over a summer. It has been working well for a couple of years now.

Do you have rain barrels? Tell us about it!

DIY rainbarrel made from ice cream tubs. Will it work well? I dont know but it only cost a dollar so worth a try.

So, since we had a really dry summer last year, I'm collecting water in rain barrels to water the garden and conserve our well-water. However, as I discovered recently, rain barrels can be places where mosquitoes can breed. So I put a thin layer of old olive oil (leftover from soap making) on top. I checked on both rain barrels today -- no #mosquitoes!

"Rain Barrels and Mosquito Pests

While using a rain barrel in the garden is great for water conservation among its other benefits, mosquitoes are a constant threat, as they carry life-threatening diseases. Learning how to control mosquitoes in a rain barrel is just as important to controlling them anywhere else, especially since the pests take advantage of standing water to help carry out their life cycle. Here are some things you can do to minimize their presence:

- Dish soap– Liquid dish soap creates a slick film on the surface of the water. When mosquitoes attempt to land, they drown before they have time to lay eggs. Use natural soap and avoid products with perfume or degreasers, especially if you water your plants with rain water. One or two tablespoons of liquid soap per week is plenty for most rain barrels.

- Mosquito dunks– Also known as mosquito donuts, mosquito dunks are round cakes of Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis), a naturally occurring bacteria that provides mosquito control in rain barrels as it slowly dissolves. However, it is safe for beneficial insects. Be sure the product label indicates the dunks are formulated for ponds because other types, which kill caterpillars, aren’t effective in water. Replace the dunks as needed. Check them after a hard rain.

- Vegetable oil– Oil floats on the surface of the water. If mosquitoes attempt to land, they suffocate in the oil. Use about a quarter cup of oil per week. You can use any type of oil, including olive oil. Horticultural oil or dormant oil are also effective for preventing mosquitoes in rain barrels."

@vga256 there should probably be a #hashtag for showing off your #rainbarrels

#rainwaterbarrels perhaps?

Woke up with some energy this morning, so I put it to good use: started two loaves of sourdough that I’m trading for my rain barrels tomorrow, made sourdough discard pancakes, took out the fruits and veggies going bad in my fridge to the compost pile, checked on my garlic sprouts and my indoor seed starts, started a new cold brew, and took a shower! Busy! Let’s add some hashtags to make new friends: #sourdough #compost #gardening #ColdBrew #RainBarrels #SolarPunk

Last night, the left its mark on the house - our window sun shade on the side yard got damaged by the wind and partially collapsed. Fortunately I was able to lower the remaining arms so it could fold down and I could secure it to the house with rope. Once the storm passes through I should be able to fix the broken arm. For now the kitchen is dark af because all the windows are basically blacked out 😂😩

The , however, are performing wonderfully 🤘

NEW HOME PROJECT THREAD: RAIN BARRELS

California's in a #drought, but we do get occasional light rain & roof condensation runoff. To collect it I bought 2 #RainBarrels.

They smell of olive oil because in their previous life they were used to transport Greek olives to the US. They're recycled as rain barrels to reduce the #CarbonFootprint of shipping them back.

I'll document the installation here in time to collect the next downpour.

Can anyone translate the Greek text embossed on the barrel?

Medium sized black and white dog sniffing rain barrel, next to a downspout on the side of my house.Detail of embossed Greek text and logo for an olive company. Translation unavailable.
