Die Kritik hat nicht viel mit diesem Meisterwerk der Phantasie damals nicht viel anfangen können. Doch das hat niemanden von uns davon abgehalten, ihn lebenslänglich zu lieben. Und jede:r von uns hat eine andere Geschichte darüber. Für mich ist er vermutlich eines der größten Geschenke, das ARTE mir machen konnte.* Und bei 12 Monaten (!) Verfügbarkeit in der Mediathek gibt es einfach keine Ausreden, die Abrufzahlen nicht so absurd hochzutreiben, wie der kleine, feine Kultsender sie noch nie zuvor gesehen hat! Dafür braue ich aber ihre Hilfe! (ARTE, WH)

@d4doome This was one of three films that I always associate with my dad, because he loved them enough to enthuse and encourage me to watch them. (A Matter of Life and Death and Olivier's Henry V were the others). I remember as a kid him explaining the POV angles, which he loved. It may also have fuelled the start of my love affair with #RalphRichardson

The other great Carol Reed-Graham Greene collaboration, a year before The Third Man, was The Fallen Idol (1948). A story of growing up, of trust, of lies and of secrets. Lies and secrets can be well-intentioned but have bad results. Great film.

Edward G was so magnetic I couldn’t turn away. Low budget & slow in parts but with some fave Brits like Nigel Bruce & Ralph Richardson, it was a US-UK merger worth watching.  Edward G’s character was especially enjoyable as the “dream the impossible” type salesman who wins over the “dignified” UK public.

Enjoyed it! Uplifting!
