New video out!
The extra vid this week is a spotlight on a tuberous sundew that's been propagating quite rapidly here: Drosera tubaestylis! As far as the tuberous species go, the rosetted ones have always been my biggest headache, they do not like me. This is an exception however, and denotes its general suitability as a beginner tuberous species as well.

New video out!
An extra vid this week, highlighting another species of Mexican butterwort, a group I haven't talked about for some time now! This round, it's Pinguicula agnata, a relatively easy and common species that shares traits with another I've highlighted before, gigantea.

The coyote’s back, and he’s here to share a cross that just got a repot and a relocate into the highland tent: Nepenthes ventricosa “red” HC A x naga! Three of the four clones we kept are shown here, matching with Embron’s coat colors and showing the variation that came out of this cross. Clone A for once actually had the best of all traits, being the most vigorous and fattest but also the darkest with a peristome that turns jet black with age. By contrast clone B is slimmer with a cherry red lip and distinct blotches on the pitcher body. Clones C and D are somewhat mini versions of the prior two but with differing shapes. These are all liable to become very large impressive plants over time, and having been in the lowland tent until now also demonstrate how extremely tolerant they are too.
Two seedling siblings of those also still available on the website Shop presently.

My personal Dracaena Draco shortly before a much-needed repot. A slow-growing, pineapple-looking plant right now, but in 10-15 years when it gets to 5 or 6 feet tall it’ll start branching to eventually form the umbrella shape that it’s known for (and that belies its relationship to the famed Socorro Dragon’s Blood trees).
I have 4 more younger seedlings currently available in the Shop so if you’d like to try out this Canary Islands native in your own home, you can! #dracaena #dragontree #strangeplants #canaryislands #rareplants #tropical #plants #educational #indoorplants #botany #horticulture #botanical #gardening #carltoncarnivores

New vs. old, Nepenthes hamata x burbidgeae.
Yeah, this cross has grown on me. Despite it more or less losing all of burbidgeae’s extreme color and chunkiness, and just about all of hamata’s teeth, the end result is somehow still very attractive, like a more heavily patterned tentaculata. And despite the soft texture of hamata being fairly obvious in the traps, they last FOREVER. The oldest fully alive one I think right now developed at least 6 months ago.

It’s tiny, but it’s alive (and should hopefully do even better once I repot now that I’ve figured out a latent issue with soils): Drosera chrysolepis.
This is my second attempt with this species, a rare, long-leaved and stem forming fuzzy South American species that is quite picky about getting cool but very sunny conditions. It bears a striking superficial similarity to species like D. capensis or perhaps more so ramentacea, but is wholly unrelated. Convergent evolution is funny like that, and rather makes one wonder what the driving forces for this growth habit are.

Caught something a little special open yesterday: finally, flowers on Drosera brevicornis. Sadly, the only other species in bloom right now (darwinensis) did not have open blooms so no crosses were possible. This thing always looks a little bit of a weird mix between ratty and oversized, like it’s not sure if it’s happy or furious at me, and the flower stalks have behaved the same: three have aborted but remain green and standing, another is developing but has frozen while this current one is in action, and it’s plenty dewy but also with lots of leaves that dropped dew already. Weird thing…

Three exciting developments representing success after a great deal of struggle:
Nepenthes mirabilis echinostoma. I’ve killed 3 of them already, but for some reason this one hung on, and just in the past couple weeks it’s suddenly jumped in size and started making traps with that characteristic wildly flared and ribbed peristome. This is supposed to be a dark clone, so hopefully the color fills in as it ages.
Nepenthes treubiana Andamata is also gaining size, though it has been fairly steadily for a while. Its characteristic bronze color is only just showing now however and should get ever stronger as time goes by. Fingers crossed that this Papuan giant also reaches the huge proportions it should too.
And, N. neoguineensis is also finally showing color and gaining size after having been a struggling little strip of leaf for so long. Leaves are flushing red and the pitchers showing some purple.
With any luck, all three of these will continue to grow over winter in their warm corner, and next year actually be large enough to make feature videos on.

My Drosera scorpioides is showing off its compact rosette covered in glistening sticky droplets. This small but mighty Australian sundew is known for its tightly coiled leaves that resemble a scorpion's tail, which is where it gets its species name. Despite its diminutive size, it's an efficient insect catcher with those sparkling dew-covered tentacles that lure prey to their demise.

As I get closer to repotting the highland and Mediterranean tents again, this is one of the species on the list to get a highlight video done for: Nepenthes mindanaoensis. Uncommon in cultivation despite being quite common in the wild, it was also a bit of a frustrating receipt as it was supposed to be the even rarer surigaoensis (still looking for that one…) which isn’t even related. This one is part of the still very confusing alata/copelandii complex, though likely a lot closer to the latter than the former.

Late night shot of Nepenthes chang, a species that still is not common in cultivation (despite as far as I can tell being fairly easy…if a bit slower to climb or flower without supports). It stands out on the “Indochinese” shelf with its red leaves too.

My Cephalotus follicularis collection is thriving with a diverse range of pitcher forms and colors. From the striped patterns to solid greens, each variety shows the remarkable diversity within this unique Australian species. The Albany pitcher plant (Cephalotus follicularis) is the only species in its genus and produces these distinctive hairy pitchers that are perfectly adapted to catching small insects in its native southwestern Australian habitat.

Nepenthes rattlesiana x hemsleyana BE-88 “Brunei Giant Red.” One of the basals is making 8 inch plus lowers while the main vine has its foot-plus uppers simultaneously, so it’s a great time to get comparison shots. Still haven’t quite been able to convince it to make the gigantic rajah-rivaling lowers that it’s reported to manage, but that’s okay; they’re big enough to be impressive already and I have other hybrids that are reaching massive proportions too.

Nepenthes hamata x attenboroughii.
I don’t think much more really needs saying; this small plant already looks amazing both newly opened and aged to black, and is almost certainly going to become a toothy giant in a few years. Definitely likes cooler weather tho, it’s gaining size only after fall has moved in.

Nepenthes (‘Helen’ x spectabilis PB) HC A x mollis JH, HC A. Growing more striking with every new pitcher, the stripes a very clear standout trait but the peristome also already showing flare influence from spathulata and mollis. I selected four to keep as I usually do, but a couple dozen siblings are also available on the website Shop., waiting for new spaces to spread their roots and take off in.

Definitely a cross you’re more likely to become enamored with in person, and o e that’s grown on me a lot: Nepenthes hamata x platychila. Lower pitchers are spectacular, flat out, but the uppers here took a while to get me to love them. They do combine parental traits really well though, and I think they have huge hybrid potential (already working on a couple that look like they’ve taken too; it’s a male, and I have a couple pollen packs left). You could go for enhancing the teeth but getting broader flare with it, or enhancing the peristome flare but keeping a little texture (spathulata x jacquelineae currently testing for that). Or, do neither and go for pitcher pattern as I did by putting it on my deep purple boschiana…

Much-needed pot upgrade for Nepenthes (maxima “miniature” x “Miranda”) x clipeata, HC D. This is currently my favorite of the four clones I kept, because of its ridiculously slender traps and very pale, sparsely mottled exterior contrasting with a fairly starkly striped peristome and mottled interior. Jury’s still out on whether these will remain small like their miniaturized parent seems to trend toward in its offspring, or if the clipeata influence will overtake and make giant oblong leaves. So far even the biggest one though remains under a foot across, if only just.

Getting a much-needed repot, Nepenthes x splendiana x mixta clone D.
This cross resulted in some extremely divergent plants, with one mimicking Ruby Alice (if you’re familiar with that Leilani plant you know…), another of similar color but a stockier hunchbacked profile, one extremely slender and pastel-hued individual, and then this plant which looks mostly like x mixta with strong northiana traits shining through, except also distinctly not just that parent showing traits in it. It produces some of the broadest, toughest leaves in the grex too, but has been rootbound and shaded for so long that it’s never gotten to really take off. Hopefully that changes now, and I can get it to vine and bloom before cutting one of the two rosette tips it’s got.

FINALLY, I caught a bloom open: Drosera spatulata ‘Tamlin’ x ultramafica.
A true spat x ultra cross, unlike the commonly traded plants that are just a large spatulata. These guys possess the stiffer, longer petioles and slightly more pronounced stipules, as well as slightly larger flower profile, of ultramafica, as well as the more leaf-happy growth habit and flatter profile of spatulata. And confirming my suspicions because none of the spent flowers before this one are even remotely filling up: the actual hybrid is sterile.
