To me @OS1337 is just an attempt to a minimalist #Linux distro because I want some #reproduceable & #auditable #firmware for various other projects, and both @yoctoproject and #RaspberryPiOS 'lite' seem rather excessive to me.
- Also a proper minimalist #CLI-based #distro that can be used for an "#SSH-#Terninal" does have merits.
I just think that it can have serious benefits being less distracting and allowing me (and others) to just use basically any hardware to get work done...
- The rest of the component selection came because it was either dictated by necessity (Linux has the most driver support and biggest community), alignment with values & goals ( @landley 's #toybox is a clean & minimalist userland) and being better than #GNU stuff (i.e. @musl / #musl) by not bricking shit at random minor updates…
@lmemsm basically the Idea behind it is to be a brutally simple #toybox + #musl / #linux distro that grew out of the necessity for me to actually think about #firmware for some projects.
- And lets just say I did saw @w84death 's #Floppynux and @landley did present a lot of convincing arguments alongside a literal walktrough to get started.
Basically I want something that is so simple and auditable that it's practical to make it pass any #verification demands for #SecureTerminal|s in #CriticalInfrastructure and #Communications.
- OFC one may point at my other projects and say: "Why don't you just put #RaspberryPiOS on a #microSD?" ignoring that the smallest image is >330MB in size and that seems kinda overkill for essentially my demands for a minimalist #Linux with very few programs in userspace.
Not to mention a #GNUfree - #Linux distro is the way to go if I want that thing to not get bricked constantly by minor #GlibC-changes...
- End goal is something akin to #MSDOS in it's brutal simplicity, but way more extendable.

Help request to the #Linux hivemind: I got a #Raspberry_Pi 500 and created two users, a root and a non-root user for my son. For some reason the #RaspberryPiOS defaults to log you in without asking for a password, which in my case is undesirable (as I want my son to be able to log in his account without having to log out from mine). If I go in the setting I can disable this, but the side effect now is that lightdm doesn't manage to start when I boot, and has to be started manually by a root user (i.e. me) every time (n.b. without lightdm you can only access the shell and not the graphical interface).
How do I get out of this?

Raspberry Pi OS gets a new update
Raspberry Pi is a small single-board computer originated in the United Kingdom that features a very cost-effective computing platform while maintaining high performance with the help of the powerful ARM64 processor. It runs a special version of Debian optimized for such computers, called Raspberry Pi OS, to take full advantage of its features.
Recently, Raspberry Pi has released a new version of their own operating system that is still based on the Debian 12 Bookworm released on June 10th, 2023. It is hinted that this new version of Raspberry Pi OS is going to be most likely the last version that uses said version of Debian before moving on to Debian 13 Trixie when the official release commences.
According to their official newsroom, they said that there have been some changes made to the OS since November of the last year.
- The swaylock lock screen application has been modified to add more feedback to the user instead of just a white screen.
- The automatic login option has been split into two: desktop and console. This is done to improve security of your Raspberry Pi.
- The new printer config application has been introduced to make managing printers simpler and more intuitive.
- The mouse emulation settings can now be accessed when managing touch screens to make it easier to use it.
- The Linux kernel has been upgraded to 6.12 to add new features and to incorporate many improvements.
Many changes have also been done to improve the performance of your Raspberry Pi to save time when working on your project, such as when working on your new application written in Python or C#.

#RaspberryPi5 #RaspberryPiOS má stále problém s HW akcelerací spousty věcí. Tohle je jedna z těch chvil, kdy uvažuju distro hop. Steam se nespustí vůbec, Moonlight neustále brečí, že nemá HW dekodér. Řešení je buď rollback na starší kernel, nebo se porozhlédnout, jak je na tom například Alpine 🤔

Besides #RaspberryPiOS there's like @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabs and me dabbling (@OS1337) tho technically they all are #i486 as they use #Linux kernels beyond the cutoff date for #i386 support.
- #NetBSD propably still supports i386 and potentially even i286...
@ryanc propably because #RaspberryPiOS just uses a linux-firmware metapackage from #Debian and they don't differenciate in their build process beyond #32bit and #64bit ?
