@remixtures This wealth gap was created due to #Reaganomics and #Thatcherism. It has been exacerbated by all presidents since then, #Democrats and #Republicans, alike. 40+ years of #neoliberal economic policy has resulted in a wealth transfer from the poor, middle class to the millionaires and billionaires. Where #Dow and #FTSE were the gods on whose altar wealth of middle class and affordability were slaughtered in hopes of #TrickleDownEconomics.
The reckoning is over due.
Just a reminder that #cyberpunk was created specifically as a reaction to #Neo-liberal #Reaganomics and the logical conclusion to it as tech advanced. Cyberpunk has always been woke and so many people haven't a clue. Add climate change and we have an equal chance of a cyberpunk or a post -apocalypse style future, though likely a mix of both.
Its why #solarpunk is about fighting the cyberpunk villain BEFORE they destroy the planet, and cyberpunk is fighting them after. Why I view solarpunk as a very punk movement, that will be a bloody transition and not because we are violent, those scared to lose their power will be. Post-transition to #degrowth will still have its political problem, not understanding that makes it more solarcore which is cottage core plus solar panels.

For those of us able to remember #reaganomics and the disaster that was (I barely do, I was a child, but I recall my parents talking about it.), we all know that #trickledown doesn't work. Unless it means getting pissed on by the gov't.

It dovetails with my feeling that all of this was inevitable, in one form or another, and both parties have been laying the groundwork for it for decades now. I don’t know what comes next. Picketty (see post) makes me hopeful, though, that inequality is ultimately defeated through its own overreach.
LATE IN YEAR TWO of #Reagan's first term (Oct on 1982), #Unemployment SKYROCKETED to 10.8% as he slashed the size of gov't.
He then went on a gov't hiring binge, dramatically growing gov't just to lower unemployment. FOR YEARS afterward, #Republicans praised "#Reaganomics" for lowering unemployment to 7.2% (the lowest in his 8 years.)
