Side-by-side portraits of Janet Yellen and Tarra Simmons were created by artist Sarah Schneiderman using non-recyclable trash and found materials on canvas. Janet Yellen’s portrait features light-toned materials with buttons, cords, and packaging, highlighting her white hair and red lips. Tarra Simmons’s portrait uses braided cords for hair, textured fabric for skin, and food packaging in the background. Text beneath each portrait identifies their achievements: Yellen as the first woman Treasury Secretary, and Simmons as the first former felon elected as County Supervisor in Kitsap, Washington. It was spring cleaning trash day last week so of course I pulled lots of potential canvases from the piles- including this little board. Then I got some beautiful new turquoise paint ($1 on sale!). And the flowers are all busting open. And it’s sunny for the first time in too many days…. Thank goodness for that since the rest of my country feels anything but sunny or hopeful. So I resist with joy and color and sharing.
