Mattresses stuffed with cash, wedding rings and sensitive data: Top items accidentally binned revealed
Experts have lifted the lid behind the scenes of what people across the nation accidentally bin.
One of the most shocking items is mattresses stuffed with cash, sometimes thousands of pounds.
Trevor Moxon from Fast Skips said: “You’d be amazed at the strange and surprising places people hide their valuables.
“It really highlights the importance of carefully checking through belongings before throwing anything away, especially when clearing out a loved one’s home after they’ve passed.
“We’ve seen people unknowingly bin precious heirlooms, cash, and sentimental items simply because they didn’t realise what was hidden inside.
“Always take the extra time to look closely, you never know what you might find tucked away.”
Another commonly skipped item is wedding rings, with panicked spouses calling to retrieve them.
Trevor said: “It’s astonishing how frequently wedding rings find their way into skips after slipping unnoticed from fingers.
“People don’t realise how easily rings can fall off, especially when handling heavy objects, gardening, or clearing out a property.
“We’ve found rings nestled amongst garden waste, building rubble, or simply resting at the bottom of skips.
“It’s always worth double-checking your hands after any clear-out job or manual labour, once a ring is gone, you might never realise until it’s too late.”
Finally, sensitive data is also often found among skips, with things like CVs, contact details, and pay slips commonly discarded. Hard drives and old computers containing bank details and passwords are also regularly found.
Trevor said: “One of the biggest risks we see is sensitive personal data being discarded carelessly in skips.
“It’s vital that people understand the dangers of identity theft and fraud associated with improperly disposing of personal information.
“Always ensure that sensitive data is shredded, erased, or professionally destroyed before throwing it away. It’s the safest way to protect yourself and your privacy.”

Recently I've been having a clear out of accumulated old computers - laptops and desktops - and wiping them down and installing fresh #Debian #Linux on them before putting them up for free on Freegle, a give-away site we have here in the UK (modelled after freecycle). These old machines won't run a safe version of windows, but Linux makes them usable again. Here's the current stack waiting but the front door for pick up - quite a few have already gone. The three in the middle are not working - no HDD or memory - but the rest are. One of those laptops still has windows xp pro on it, because even Debian struggles on a machine with only 512mb of ram! One that went this evening was a big screen Acer Aspire that went to the organiser of a local computer club. #recycling

At another street food market place, this time in #Aarhus. The selection of food is great! Having some veggie Greek salad then I might hit up the ramen spot. Sadly the traditional Danish grandmother’s kitchen was all meat-based, but that’s understandable.

Hmm, #Scotland, surely we can be better at #recycling than this? Lowest recycling rate of all of the countries of the UK? If #Wales can recycle almost 2/3 of waste (good on them!), I’m sure we all could, too! ♻️
“In 2013, Scottish homes recycled 41.6% of their waste but by 2023 that figure had increased by less than 2 percentage points to 43.5%. The figures for England and Northern Ireland are slightly better but for Wales it is a massive 64.7%.”
