Returned #HerrSchröder to #Schwiemu (we have the #RedDragon now) and picked up a broken miter saw from her attic instead.

I think the motor is dead but haven't checked what the problem is yet. Maybe I can fix it and turn it into a metal saw, if not, maybe mount an angle grinder on the swing arm. I already have one for wood but could definitely use one for metal.

A red electric garden shredder, originally from Hecht but hence improved with some scrap steel by myself. It has a plastic pusher paddle, a little control panel and a large white slide-in crate for the chips. It's sitting in a wet old concrete yard.

A dusty old mitre saw without sawblade. It's got a big motor, a handle and an aluminium turntable with two hand cranks for clamping it onto a trestle or something. It's loaded in the back of a car on a protective plastic mat.

The #RedDragon got fed the huge pile of apple branches from the orchard and the resulting chips got raked out along the sauna paths, which were already getting muddy.

I call it #BioGravel - it's great, keeps you from sloshing around in mud, slipping on ice and nobody has to remove it later if its no longer needed.

Yes the grass will grow through it eventually, but that is absolutely fine :)

Phew, sweaty and dirty but five big piles of branches (or entire trees/bushes) are chipped.

The last load with the good stuff (apple branches) is still in the trailer, will have to think first about where to best put that.

The chipper is great, the tractor powers it well and I've not even used half a tank of fuel for all of this. The tractor has been running off that rejuvenated ancient diesel for the past few months, by the way. A little bit of dirt in the filter, but I suspect that was already in the tank when we bought it.

Loads more pruning and other cleanup to come.

Next the pile of thorny fuckers** went in. These had to be handled with care for obvious reasons. Not throwing that crap onto any path, instead I shoveled this load onto the compost pile as I don't want to pull thorns out of shoes and tyres for the next couple years. Hope they decay or at least soften 🫣

** Possibly blackthorn

A small tree or bush with extremely hard, long and sharp thorns all over it. It looks ouchy. Behind it a corner of a trailer laden with chipped bushes of the same kind.

Dental checkup. All good, just a few bits of stringy thuja meat stuck between the teeth.

Both grease nippels were loose, so the whole "check all bolts" thing in the manual is not for nothing on a piece of vibrating machinery.

A tractor attached, PTO driven woodchipper in red. The cutting wheel housing is flipped open for maintenance. Inside a shaft riding on two bearings with a 40kg flywheel on which four adjustable blades are mounted and on the other side heavy steel fan/sweep blades that produce enough draft to blow/push the woodchips out without clogging.

Unloading the #chippertrain.

The gnarly thuja bush will now keep this tractor path from getting too muddy.

This chippertrain setup with the trailer hitched to the rear of the woodchipper works as well as I hoped, possibly better. I can tilt the trailer up with the three point hitch and just rake the chips out of the back with ease. 👍

This works, after some adjustment of the #RedDragon's mouth, 93% of the woodchips end up in the trailer and the tractor can haul both around without having to disconnect anything.

I wanted to let the air out of that thuja pile but couldn't finish as that cloud turned dark and angry. I managed to back the entire train into the big barn just before it started pouring.

Half the pile is gone though. These super gnarly branches worked fine so the rest will be easy. Iseki finally got an actual workout.

Ok, after a lot of messing around with the driveshaft, the #RedDragon is all set up. That's what the manufacturer calls it. It makes sense when you see it in action. Long neck that spits wood chips, like a fire breathing dragon? No? Come on.

Too little sleep last night to work out that to shorten the sliding shaft I needed to remove 30 cm from both parts, not 15cm from each 🤦‍♂️

Sadly had to cut through the nice warning label, so it is preserved here.

Wood is chipped. It's loud. No, not the drive or anything, just the knifes tearing it to chips make a lot of noise. Hearing protection mandatory.

Max diameter 80mm hard, 120mm soft woods.

First pile is already turned into woodchips and raked out on a previously muddy area.

Test fit of PTO drive shaft between tractor and chipper. It can slide in another 9 cm but the distance to the hitch is much greater than that, so the shaft is way too long.

One half of the shaft on a workbench, plastic cover already shortened, a re-usable zip tie attached that helped mark a straight line around the circumference of the shaft for cutting. The shaft is a sort of three-ridged star shape.

The result, a bunch of fresh woodchips and some leaves and thuja bits raked out on a previously muddy area behind a fence gate.

That's one of the reasons why I like #RedDragon more than #TheSilenceOfTheLambs. It's a love story. The question it poses is "can a monster love?" The guy in Red Dragon is not a vampire or a werewolf, he's a true monster, and yet, he poses that question to himself during the whole film. It went in an unexpected direction at the end (or at least I think it did), but it's OK.
