@neve
Howdy! It's Monday. Again.
I'm recovering from . . . something. Convenient care says it's not any of the bad things, so maybe just Laryngitis.

Counting days until knee surgery on the 29th (oh boy).

And I finished the Marty Hench trilogy by Cory Doctorow (love, love, love) and got my hubby reading them!

It was standing room only at the Toronto stop of Cory Doctorow 's ( @pluralistic ) book tour, for #PicksAndShovels

Second week of the library tour. Visited the Charles H. Gere location. Much larger than Bethany it had a wide selection. Ended up bringing home and from @pluralistic which I am very much looking forward to finishing. Next week we may head to the downtown branch.

Getting to see @pluralistic speak the day after the #crowdstrike fiasco seems fortuitous. #TheInternetCon #RedTeamBlues #ExileInBookville

Wil Wheaton brings another thrilling @pluralistic book to life: "Red Team Blues".

As with previous books, the pleasure of hearing details of the specialised familiar both in the essential and cursory is balanced by the haunting anticipation of the inevitable savage beating of the protagonist of whom we've become fond.

Looking forward to episodes two - "The Bezel" - and three of the Marty Hench saga.

Forcing myself to pause my reading of "the bezzle'" by Corey Doctorow (for like an hour. Well, we'll see if I can make it an hour.) because it is too damn good and I simply don't want it to be over too quickly. I was super bummed when I read "Red Team Blues" quickly. Did not want that book to be over either. #thebezzle #redteamblues #coreydoctorow #martinhench

This arrived. Yay. I love Will Wheaton reading Cory's @pluralistic's books but I have to own the hard copy too. Loving learning more about cybersecurity, crypto and finance with Marty Hench.

@brinnbelyea @pluralistic there’s a real warmth about #RedTeamBlues - a kind of ‘good politics as common sense good living’ I’ve only really got elsewhere from #Vonnegut. It feels like it’s been worked into every pore and crevice of the thing like some kind of delicious but thoroughly unpretentious barbecue marinade.

Just finished the audiobook of @pluralistic's second Marty Hench novel, #TheBezzle.

(Full disclosure: @WilWheatonRSS reads my name at the end because I was publicly enthusiastic about #RedTeamBlues, the first Marty Hench novel, on social media. If you haven't read it, add it to your queue. It doesn't matter which order you read them in.)

"It's complicated" is the most accurate non-spoily way to describe it. I also finished it waaay too quickly.

You will especially like it if you enjoy people talking about their passions. They may or may not align with your passions, and it doesn't matter because you /want/ to know more.

I like Marty. I have yelled at him for doing stupids, but I'm a geezer and sometimes it's about #experience, not brainpower.

He would be a cool person to know, and not because of his professional skillset, rather, because he's ... interesting.

In this book, I discover that I am not alone in this opinion. I also rediscovered that his #heart is bigger than his head.

There's #sex, #drugs. and .... #soul ... in this story. It's fictional, but packs a /lot/ of #fact. You can easily believe stuff could happen that way. And some of it did, though without Marty's participation.

I backed the #kickstarter; you can find the #audiobook on Libro.fm and support your local bookstore /at the same time/. You can also get the #ebook or a print copy in the usual places.

If you hurry, you can get /all/ the Cory Doctorow ebooks on #HumbleBundle. You won't be disappointed and your purchase supports @eff.

Get on the Marty Hench train with Red Team Blues and a bunch of other Cory Doctorow @pluralistic books via Humble Bundle.

Shockingly available in the UK, unlike another recent popular book deal, for £14.34 for all 18 books ($18 in the USA)

As another thread has pointed out, adjust the donation percentage as the default to the EFF is only 72p, and be careful of the default price selected.

Really enjoying @pluralistic’s Red Team Blues.

Unlike the protagonist, I’m very blue team, and this is spot on:

“Some people love to play for the blue team. They design careful systems, put in checks and double checks. They run risk-limiting audits. Above all else, they _simplify_.”

#RedTeamBlues

(Longer snippet in image, with text in the alt.)

Some people love to play for the blue team. They design careful systems, put in checks and double checks. They run risk-limiting audits. Above all else, they _simplify_.

Complexity is the enemy of security, after all. The more moving parts and seams a system has, the more places there are for an attacker to find purchase and slip inside. Team blue is team minimalism, the Marie Kondo of security. If a procedure does not fill you with joy, remove it and replace it with a simpler one. An ideal security system was a box with only one door with one lock with one key and only one person knows about it.

Come to think of it, the ideal security is a box with _no_ doors, _no_ lock, _no_ key, and _no one_ knows about it.

Scratch that. The truly ideal security is _no box at all_.
