Welcome to all #tiktokrefugee s! As a bit of a #redditrefugee, I know you're probably having a bit of a confusing time right now. But it gets better, and the communities you'll find here are better too. Plus, no ads!

To any new arrivals here on the fediverse - you are welcome here.
Any step one can make to move away from the domination of proprietary platforms, technologies and all kinds of billionaires and fascists, is a potentially good thing. Things might be confusing to you at first, as all change can be difficult. Things are definitely not perfect here either and the fediverse has its own set of problems, but there are many helpful and friendly communities here. I wish you that you find your people (and foxes, and cats etc)
I would also like to respectfully ask the people who moved here to refrain from calling yourself #TwitterRefugee or #RedditRefugee or anything like that. An alternative is simply saying that you left a certain platform, or moved away.
I would like to encourage you to learn more about what it is like to be a refugee, and if it is possible for you, consider donating to organizations that help refugees. One such example of an organization is: https://www.pah.org.pl/en/ukraine
Being a refugee is tied to a lot of harship and severe trauma, to put it mildly, and using this word to describe changing social media platforms is not adequate.
So in response to Reddit and Twitter, I actually *joined* social media for the sorta first time. Tumblr is clearly the most fun, with Lemmy in second. Matrix, Mastodon... doesn't feel so hot.

@whatstheruckus Sorry, I'm still not that good with the mechanizations of the "Federation" yet (I feel like I joined StarTrek), so I inadvertently filched a re-post of yours from another ... planet?
I wanted to mention, if you're still getting used to this format as am I, using a hashtag for #reddit and #redditrefugee, etc., will connect you with others who migrated here, as well. I noticed them on my general timeline, though I'm not in that group, but it might help you find your peeps?
Hello fellow ex-Redditors! Hope you're enjoying Mastodon as much as I have been! #redditrefugee
Reddit : The blackout hasnât had âsignificant revenue impactâ, itâll pass.
Also Reddit : https://mashable.com/article/reddit-pressures-mods-reopen-subreddits-api-blackout-protest
Maybe the blackout actually HAS an impact?

@patvid yep. Kinda been learning this the hard way when diving in for my first time earlier this week. #redditrefugee
@feditips I appreciate you and this account. As a #redditrefugee, itâs a great help!
I knew this would happen, and Redditâs response will be âwe have to get these subreddits back up for our customersâ when what they are really looking for is profits. #redditrefugee #redditblackout #redditMigration #apolloforever https://social.linux.pizza/@yeold/110547085897125290

Just arriving here after nuking my account, some years old, many thousand points...
Used this tool to wipe things out:

I'm also survivor from the Great Stack Exchange Debacle, when they slandered and doxxed a widely esteemed contributor. The effect was getting rid of the "old timers" who worked hard to build vibrant communities -moderators, power users and regular editors.
Who cared the most, left the place.
Apollo loyalty is part of the reason Iâm a #redditrefugee, so I wanted to share this for anyone who hasnât heard @christianseligâs viewpoint. #redditblackout #apolloapp #apolloforever! https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/13/23759180/reddit-protest-private-apollo-christian-selig-subreddit
@Pepijn interesting to hear about your dilemma modding a large sub. Iâm just more of lurker but was on the platform for 13 years and trying to make the switch. Here on mastodon, I put in hashtags to follow based on the name of subreddits I was in. Do you think thatâs a good recommendation to have more of a Reddit-like experience on here? I never really got into Twitter. Iâm also on lemmy.world seeing what thatâs all about. #redditrefugee
There's no algorithm here, directing people to your posts (or sending you adsđ), so be sure to use & #follow hashtags, as well as #FollowBack accounts that interest you. The more you interact with other accounts, the better your feed will be.
You should be sure to check out and follow these accounts for great helpful advice about the #Fediverse:

Me too. And while I think that's ultimately a good thing I imagine things will get chaotic as #redditrefugee s like me search for a place
As a soon to be #RedditRefugee, what's the deal with #Lemmy? My main question at the moment is how are communities coalescing on instances? Like, what's stopping 8 different instances from hosting a `politics`, `funny`, `startrek`, or `canada` community, and how do we manage to decide on where we talk about each?
Well with reddit starting to implode I'm going to create a new lemmy instance. I'm aiming for it to be self governed and friendly as (roughly) explained in the document below. I'd love to get a group of people to start this with as opposed to just me. Doesn't matter what you can contribute, if you're interested at all please DM me.
