The young hawk trio recently fledged from the nest I've posted some pictures of in the past few months. I love the silly twisty neck lol

Two juvenile red-tailed hawks perched very close to each other on a dead tree branch, viewed through a halo of blurry leaves in the foreground. The hawk further up is looking behind them to stare directly at the camera, and the lower hawk that's facing towards the camera is looking off to the side, with their left talon stretched out in front of them sillilyThe pair of juveniles together still. The upper one is looking off to the side while perched strangely, gripping the tree between two of their forward-facing toes instead of grabbing around the branch like normal. The lower one is in the same position but with both talons perched, while they have their head twisted all the way upside down with their beak open to look at something, and they are extremely silly-lookingA juvenile red-tailed hawk perched on a dead tree branch near the tree trunk, with their left talon lifted up to their chest and staring directly at the cameraThe previous juvenile using their talon to scratch their chin while they have their eyes closed

This summer we’ve had a family of red-tailed hawk nesting in one of our pine trees - two parents and two chicks (which we learned are called eyasses). Last week one of the chicks was learning how to fly by jumping from one side of our deck to the other…..plus learning to walk (a bit like watching a drunk 80 year-old). Today three of them were hanging out together in another tree.

Raptor’s Vigil

Charlie and I took a new route for this morning’s walk. My planned path was blocked, so we pivoted north instead of south. Near the turnaround point, I spotted two red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), each perched in a different tree to the southeast. Unfortunately, getting closer wasn’t an option—some areas were fenced off, while others were thick with tall brush. Wearing shorts, I wasn’t about to wade through grass and foliage.

"A red-tailed hawk perches firmly on a moss-covered tree branch, its gaze sharp and unwavering. The bird’s feathers are a tapestry of rich brown and cream tones, the lighter underside flecked with dark speckles. Its hooked beak is poised, a testament to the predator’s keen precision. The hawk's talons grip the branch with quiet strength, a balance of elegance and force. Surrounding branches, bare and twisting, frame the scene against a pale, almost ethereal sky that softens the background, allowing the hawk’s form to stand boldly in contrast." - Copilot

The last to fledge.... This red-tailed hawk chick was nervous about joining its siblings out in the world, but finally got the courage (see the last image).

Nature’s Indifference

Weasels are one of my favorite photographic subjects. They're fierce and fearless while being absolutely adorable. They often seem larger than life as they pop in and out of holes before dashing around their fields. As always, Nature is indifferent to our feelings. There's a reason weasels spend most of their lives hiding in the burrows of their prey. They're no less vulnerable to the larger predators who rule their territories. Their small size gives them easier access to prey, but given […]
