First, his name is pronounced with the emphasis on the third syllable, in the way of the francophones. He grins in amusement as I try it out, giving his approval following a couple of attempts. Second, he wanted people to know that he is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), not Congo Brazzaville, also called the Republic of the Congo. “Don’t get confused,” he said.</p> <p>Leonard’s story, beginning with his escape from the DRC through his current life in Columbus, is filled with twists and turns. “My country is the richest country in Africa, so it is a lot of war there, because of mineral… gold, diamond,” he said. “I fled from my country to save my life, which was in danger.”</p> <p>He landed empty handed in the neighboring country, Uganda, where he’d spend the next 14 years. “Life was not easy,” he said. “So, whe

My father-in-law was given this watch by his father just before he fled Lithuania. The Russian Army was closing in and the Lithuanians had enough of Russian rule. He carried the watch through a labor camp in Dachau, through a resettlement camp in Berlin, and into the United States along with the 5 dollars that he was given by Catholic Charities. I never met him, but my wife says he worked 364.5 days a year, he took half a day off for Christmas.
