On a red wall a simple carved gilt frame. In it a painting of the saint giving a blessing. He's framed by an archway, and there is a book, and a garland of autumnal fruit and leaves.

Between these two paintings, how many years ?
None.
They were made roughly the same year : 1465. Yet they display totally different approaches towards representation. One, by Giovanni di Paolo, from Siena, is narrative, semantic, descriptive, in the spirit of the Middle-ages. The other, by Andrea Del Verrocchio, of Florence, is focusing on emotion, through the accurate, optic representation of shapes and attitudes.

Giovanni di Paolo : saint Hieronymus appears to Saint Augustine.
Framed in arches supporting a roof, saint Augustine is at his desk. A hole in the wall displays saint Hyeronimus. The right part of the painting displays a city street with a bearded man standing in a doorway. Buildings are scaled down so they can fit in the painting while allowing us to see the characters at a big scale.

C’est le genre d’ouvrage où l’on ne “monte” pas seulement : on admire chaque courbe, chaque marche, comme une sculpture grandeur nature.
