Focus #car 🚗:
👉 Vehicle #maintenance/#service and #repair costs are growing faster than household income, similar to PT costs
👉 Car #purchase, spare parts and accessories have less impact on household budgets, despite an increase since 2017
👉 #Fuel prices have fluctuated greatly, peaking in 2022

I am hosting another do-it-together bike kitchen next sunday (june 8th), 12-16 in case you need help with your bike or just wanna nerd about bikes :)

If you are at your ease today & have 14 minutes to spare, let me recommend this short 2013 video from my old neighbourhood to you. "Art of Repair' charts the stories and passions of those whose job it is to fix and to mend – cars, upholstery, violins – in a world away from city pressures of new purchases and consumption. Their talent is to mend and to extend an object's lifespan, part of a rebellious tradition that honours recovery over waste."

My Oryx Pro 5 (which I've had for quite some time) was consistently running hot. But it wasn't thermal paste this time! I actually put fresh paste on maybe 2 years ago, and gave the fans a quick cleaning.

My first clue was that the heat was present all along the laptop palm rest, especially above the keyboard. This model has a massive heatsink, and that was radiating heat straight up. The fans were spinning and air was moving, but not much, and they weren't moving much heat out.

So I pulled the heatsink again, and disassembled the fans this time. Sure enough, big wads of dust in all three fans, partially obscuring the finned radiator sections. I'm guessing 30-40% blockage. I cleaned everything thoroughly and it's working, but I'll have to wait until #bazzite installs (Bazzite is becoming my go-to for gaming hardware).

Also replaced the circa 2019 battery with a fresh one. It was reporting 26% health and held a charge for maybe 40 minutes... not great.

I repaired stuff ✌️
by designing a replacement in #FreeCAD 😃

This part looked really challenging, but the result not just works, it seems to be more flexible and sturdier than the original.

Tried to fix the rotary encoder on this TEAC vintage amp but the cleaning did not go as expected so, I ordered a new replacement part (Alps Alpine 15-step rot. enc.) for 5€ (10€ incl. shipping). #electronics #repair

Debugged the lawn mower, which was clogging a lot and something didn't seem correctly assembled in the collector chute.

Found a horrible cowboy fix that seemed to be there for no reason at all.

Sorted and took off the drive belt from the dysfunctional wheel drive. Could repair with some parts, but I don't use it anyways. At least the belt can stop melting away now 😆

I see why they left us this thing even though it was almost new. Two layers of bad bodges 😆

I have a Lenovo F0D9 AIO that badly needed fresh thermal paste. At idle, I was hitting CPU temps > 75°C, and thermal throttling when running applications. This is an Intel i5 8400T, not the most powerful CPU, and those temps were unacceptable.

So I dove in! These are really nicely constructed units, with a 1080p 24" touchscreen. However, you have to pry the screen out of the plastic back half to get at anything. That was particularly nerve-wracking, but I managed without cracking or chipping the screen. Inside it's a fairly standard layout: motherboard, CPU cooler, MASSIVE fan, hard drive caddy, laptop-style DVD-RW drive, and pop-up webcam assembly.

Pleased to find that someone swapped out the WD Blue HDD I was expecting with a decent SSD. Thanks! And as suspected, the thermal paste was gnarly. You can see a little in the background. I tried to add an old NVMe I had laying around, but it wasn't recognized.

With fresh paste I'm hovering around 66°C. Success!

Closeup of the motherboard inside a Lenovo All In One desktop PC. The motherboard resembles a laptop board more than a desktop, but all the key components are there. Some of the old thermal paste is visible on a chip near the top of the frame. An NVMe drive is visible; unfortunately it wasn't recognized by the system so I removed it.The Lenovo All In One computer with the monitor portion, heat sink, and camera unit removed. The other major components (HDD caddy, DVD-RW drive, motherboard, and cooling fan) are still visible. Of note is the dried out thermal paste on the CPU; it really needed to be changed badly. The Lenovo All In One PC reassembled, and showing lower idle temperatures in the KDE system monitor tool (this machine is running Bazzite Linux and is used for older lightweight games). The highest CPU temp showed is 66°C

I found this little #Yamaha #PortaSound PS-2 at a flea market for 5€. It even came with a nice carry case and the manual. The main chip is a #YM1104 C. Only thing I had to fix was the volume potentiometer, which was a bit scratchy and worked intermittently. A bit of cleaning and it works again. Maybe possible mods would be USB-C power input, or Li-Ion battery.

We got sick of the flimsy tables and chairs that we had, cheap Ikea stuff (only thing we could afford at the time) and went looking for a proper wood table and chairs, the kind we have grown up with in the countryside.

Found this over 100 year old gem second-hand for 10€. Sanding, a new coat of paint and it is gorgeous! And so sturdy!

My partner made a few wall shelves to accompany it, from an old table we had.

Even the tulips are diy (from our tiny garden).
