#RepairableTech

2026-01-10

@kkarhan @Ninji

Every device advertised with "#AI" od having a "#CopilotKey" gets instantly put on the "never ever buy!"-List…

You know what I want instead?

#Linux support - and I mean fully!
#Keyboards with
#Trackpoints!
#RepairableTech
instead of AntiRepairDesign!

Me too
Which is why I have a second hand business think pad, I5 processor 8GB Ram, antiX linux great performance.

And tough.

I'm very happy that Bosh actually agreed to send me a replacement mixer attachment (for free no less) instead of forcing me to return/throw the whole kitchen machine out. And then I realised the bar is in fucking hell for that to not be obvious. Still, props to Bosh for doing the thing 👏

As much as I still despise #Apple's #AntiRepairDesign and #SolderedDownRAM which has no legitimate excuse, the #MacMiniM4 at least doesn't have #SolderedDownSSDs anymore so #Upgrades and #Repair on that part that WILL INEVITABLY FAIL OVER TIME AND USE is getting cheaper.

My Fairphone screen has been cracked for over a year and I still haven't fixed it.

I don't think I'm doing this repairable phone thing right...

A Fairphone 4 with a cracked upper screen and front camera. On screen is this toot, with hashtags, absent the photo this Alt Text is describing. The phone is sat on a coffee table and a yellow and green table runner, decorated with a nature-inspired pattern. My phone is on 6% battery, and clearly needs charging! In another layer of meta, this photo was taken on a spare Fairphone 4.

#framework users, especially early adopters: how much money have you spent on replacement parts, in how much time?

Please no hyping up the brand and trying to convince people to buy things in this thread (and also no harassing anyone for buying stuff! that'll bias my sample towards underconsumers and I love underconsumption but I want more information than that!)
I just want to talk numbers!

Yes, we need #RepairableTech and espechally #ReliableTech as in "It doesn't break" and it's really infuriating how modern staff is way "crappier" and "worse" than it's price (adjusted for inflation) would make it justifyable...

But then again I'm also not the guy buying the latest shit off the Internet or the latest fashion.

  • All I care about is that something does it's job first and foremost!

@JessTheUnstill @GreenRoc Personally I wish for #RightToRepair to be mandated including access to #schematics, #parts, #firmware and #tools needed so #manufacturers would be forced to actually give a shit and build #RepairableTech...

Remember: Most folks are mere #consumers, not #owners and espechally not #tinkerers!

  • THIS is why #RaspberryPi were able to basically monopolize the #ARM - #SBC market for tinkerers because they are the only one's that actually build devices that just work out of the box and have #documentation, whereas all the competitors just fart out some PCBs and some hacked-up images and then tell people to 'go fuck themselves' when they don't want to just buy but do something with it!

The HMD Fusion is full of possibilities.

It can be a barcode scanner, mobile gaming console, workhorse, or minimalist daily driver; just by swapping the back. And if HMD hasn’t made the outfit you need? They provide the resources to make your own. This is what mass customization looks like!

Add in an IP54 rating, easily repairable design, and a starting price under $300? Yeah. We’re impressed.

Read more about it on our blog: ifixit.com/News/111076/hmd-fus

HMD Fusion Gaming Outfit with its HMD smartphone placed above it. The phone is upside down, while the controller is right side up. This showcases the pin connectors on the back of the phone and front of the joystick, which is how they connect together. The controller's joysticks are offset, like an Xbox or Nintendo Switch Pro controller.

@felyashono I still think that the extra weight and thickness is justified for a longer product lifespan, as #RepairableTech will always be cheaper for the #consumer and better for the #envoirment.

  • So even if you don't give a shit about the rest of the world, paying like €50 for a #battery that takes mere seconds to replace vs. €200+ on an iPhone that takes about a quarter hour depending on how busy a store is and how diligent the technicians are, that'll certainly impact you 1-2 years down the line unless you are the kind of "rich asshole consumer" who threats $1k+ devices as disposable electronics.

#Apple could make shit even lighter if they set it in aerogel or resin or used "#Thinkpadnium" plastics, but then they couldn't even overcharge people on displays which - like batteries - they #DRM'd the shit out of.

  • Would it make Apple's devices heavier if they didn't glue the shit out of everything? Propably not as they are able to shove two dozen different screws inside just to complicate repairs and maximize personnel hours needed for swapping parts like charging port, battery, camera and screen...

As much as I dunk on #Fairphone for #downgrading every device since the #FP3plus, they at least live the "#SchematicsOrDie!" principle and actually deliver #Schematics, #BoardView and #ComponentList on their website in a publicly accessible #PDF...

youtube.com/watch?v=EAogtqyN22M

In all seriousness tho: they ain't perfect but the best there is in terms of "you csn buy this right now in stores" kinda brand that isn't some obsure crowdfunding thingy but has an actual track record!

  • Also shoutout to #LouisRossmann for releasing an addendum on his own...

Love Framework? The new Ryzen AI 300 model is here. Blazing fast CPU/GPU & Copilot+ support make it tempting. Just watch the battery. Still the upgradeable champ.

@lilith I prefer #RepairableTech like on the #Fairphone which is also built to not die or shatter into dozens of sharp glass pieces when it falls to the floor.

I just came across Framework laptops: frame.work
Now, I don’t need a new #laptop any time soon, but when I do I will definitely consider these.
Finally a company who designs their devices for #repairability and #upgradablity. I am so tired of the tendency of especially Apple of gluing devices together and whatnot which makes it very difficult to repair or upgrade anything.
Framework goes against the race to obsolescence and their designs are open source.

@topher @nekohayo +1 thanks...

I think it's important to #reuse, #repair & #upcycle not only when money is tight, but as a matter of principle.

  • Every production is a toll on the planet and ecosystem and thus we should not only choose #RepairableTech but also keep stuff up and running or at least salvage tech...

Again: I started @OS1337 as an exercise in #minimalism as my #P11Z is getting too slow for @bunsenlabs / #BunsenlabsLinux.

  • Abeit the current target is a #1440kB version that allows one to #SSH into things and work that way...

@CppGuy they do it because they face neither #reward (building #RepairableTech) nor #Penalty (for #AntiRepairDesign) and they all act as #cartel to accelererate #Enshittification...

@arrrg I tend to disagee...

Shure you can make the argument towards #TechIlliterates that they don't know better, but it's our failure as #TechLiterates to not just #preach and #demand #RepairableTech, but oftentimes people don't follow up their demands with actual purchase decisions.

  • OFC if one only has like $100 and they can only get an unrepairable & barely working shitPhone 4 SE from 2016 that's not to blame them, because #UseLonger & #ReUse is better than #Recycle or #BuyANewOne...

In #capitalism, the #users and #consumers do have #choices and they can decide to #unionize and collectively #refuse to buy or use garbage.

#WhatYouAllowIsWhatWillContinue applies to everything and this we need to demand and force change by all means necessary to do so.

OFC please do go ahead and choose #UnauthorizedRepair to keep your gear up and running as long as feasible anyway - just like I'll not toss out my still working #X230Tablet for a #Framework13 unless I literally have no other choice...

All in all, this sounds like a great deal: reduced carbon footprint, repairable, de-googled. I'd like to say this is the future of telephony, and don't get me wrong, I'm not endorsing a company, I would gladly buy a similar solution from any company whatsoever
