Heavy Sounds is an album by American jazz drummer Elvin Jones and bassist Richard Davis, recorded in 1967 and released on the Impulse! label.

Heavy Sounds was originally intended to be a trio date, with Jones, Davis, and guitarist Larry Coryell. However, Coryell did not appear, and producer Bob Thiele suggested that Jones and Davis play something together in his absence. The result was a 11½ minute duet version of "Summertime". Davis recalled: "No discussion, no editing, no plan, I just started playing the melody, and there he was... and I just thought there was some very brotherly thing about that particular piece." - Wikipedia

Live at the Village Vanguard is a live album by American jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie recorded on October 1, 1967, at the Village Vanguard and released on Solid State later that year.

The AllMusic review stated "These lengthy performances (all but one of the seven songs are over 11 minutes) contain some loose and rambling moments but also plenty of creative playing by this unusual group of all-stars" - Wikipedia

First Prize! is an album by saxophonist/clarinetist Eddie Daniels recorded in 1966 and released on the Prestige label the following year.

Allmusic awarded the album 4½ stars with Scott Yanow stating "When one hears this early Eddie Daniels set, it is surprising to realize that he would remain in relative obscurity for almost another 20 years. As shown on the three of the eight selections on which he plays clarinet, Daniels even at this early stage ranked near the top, while his tenor playing on the remaining numbers was already personal and virtuosic" - Wikipedia

Stan Getz & Bill Evans, Previously Unreleased Recordings, 1974 on Verve

Sometimes just referred to as Stan Getz & Bill Evans, this was recorded in 1964 but not released until 1974. Ron Carter (A side) and Richard Davis (B side) on bass, with Elvin Jones on drums. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs NJ and produced by Creed Taylor.

There’s a whole series of “Previously Unreleased Recordings” advertised on the rear jacket. Beautiful sounding LP well packaged.

My copy—via Worcester Record Riot—is of the 2024 UMG/UMe reissue, overseen by Chad Kassem from Acoustic Sounds.

Black Fire is a studio album by American jazz pianist and composer Andrew Hill, released on Blue Note Records in 1964. It was Hill's debut for the label. Initially, drummer Philly Joe Jones was scheduled to play on the album, but was replaced by Roy Haynes after scheduling issues. The rest of the band consists of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson and bassist Richard Davis. The Allmusic review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine calls the album "an impressive statement of purpose that retains much of its power decades after its initial release... a modern jazz classic." - Wikipedia

Bobby Hutcherson - Dialogue

Hutcherson is the band leader here, on his first released (but 2nd recorded) solo album, but the pieces are all by Andrew Hill and Joe Chambers.

Then again, these works are *highly* improvisational post-bop. Hutcherson, Hill and Chambers are joined by Sam Rivers on tenor sax, Richard Davis on bass and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet.

Just finished "The Year's Best Horror Stories No.3" from Sphere (1973). Richard Davis has pretty good taste - these stories have aged better than your average Pan fare - and he's not afraid to take a punt on a longer story when it's really good. This collection starts with "Pages From A Young Girl's Journal" by Robert Aickman and ends with "Events at Poroth Farm" by TED Klein, both of which have since become famous. Klein was apparently a zine discovery at the time.

Also of interest is a terrific early Ramsey Campbell story of sylvan weird, "The Old Horns". It's not one of his really early ones, which are way too indebted to Lovecraft; this one owes more to writers like Machen and Blackwood, but is also full of the oblique, dreamlike features and psychological disintegration that you associate with the writer in his prime. Then there's "Haggopian" by a young Brian Lumley - marred by too much OTT Lovecraftiana, especially at the end (handy hint: if your entire last paragraph is written in italics and ends with an exclamation mark, you may be overdoing it) but with a compelling central concept. In the decades to come Lumley would become a cracking writer of atmospheric but action-packed horror stories set in the Mediterranean/Aegean (try "The Sun, The Sea and the Silent Scream" and "No Sharks In The Med") and this longish story is a prelude to that. This anthology is also remarkable for having none of the misogyny you used to find in the Pan ones, despite what the cover might suggest (it's yet another old horror book where none of the stories actually feature the delights on the cover.)

Since stumbling upon this online I've tried to find other Sphere "best of" anthologies, but to no avail!

Cover of the book showing a pair of rats with red eyes feasting on a framed picture of a fruity girl. Surprise! Where they have bitten away the canvas, flesh and blood spills out. The girl's remaining blue eye suggests she's seen it all before.
