Wow. This is pretty much the kind of reaction from the youtube skeptical / atheist communitiy i've been eagerly awaiting to drop for, well, the better part of a decade probably, concerning once highly regarded evolutionary biologist, science communicator and former spearhead of the skeptical community, Richard Dawkins who at some point must've had a minor stroke or something and started labeling himself a "cultural christian", made a complete u-turn into junk science, conspiracy theories, transphobic bigotry and now frequently accociates with the usual figures of that whole right-wing "intellectual dark web" dumpster fire.

So yeah, this was a long time coming and it's refreshing to see that some prominent voices are taking a stand. What the video doesn't address though is the elephant in the room of the Center For Inquiry, home to the Skeptical Inquirer and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, which still does a lot of great work but sadly also still chooses to amplify Dawkins' bullshit by way of speaking engagements, articles, interviews, etc. As i understand, that may just be 'cos him and the CSI have become so historically interlinked, with his Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science even having become an arm of the CSI, that it might now be difficult to burn that bridge altogether, with Dawkin's social circle probably wielding quite some power in the organization.

They need a clean break though, better sooner than later, as to not drift apart from the wider skeptic / atheist community, who overall skew more toward a humanist worldview and are feeling increasingly alienated from an organization giving a bullhorn to a (honestly, not very skeptical, atheist or scientific, at this point) right-wing minority among the movement. Something's gonna happen inevitably. It kinda did happen here in germany already when the GWUP - an organization with similar goals to the CFI - got overtaken by a new leadership board going all-in on anti-woke hysteria. Many folks chose to leave the sinking ship at that point and founded the Skeptix e.V. instead. The CFI still has a small window left to pick a side, otherwise the community will.

@gimulnautti don't worry, i've been reading a lot of #RichardDawkins and #SamHarris and they've convinced me that Europe, due its superior moral culture and the influence of Christianity, has turned a corner and will not descend into barbarism again. Likewise #StevenPinker concludes the same, but credits Europe's wonderful liberal political arrangements and sociotechnical progress.

@todayilearned I think I am one of the only people of my generation (or maybe the last generation) who heard the word "meme" in the scientific context first.

I heard it in uni maybe in 2nd or 3rd year when one of my friends gave a talk about simulating evolution using software. Then, just one or two years later I started seeing the word "meme" pop up on the English-speaking internet literally everywhere.
