#Introduction

Rising Tide #Canberra is the Canberra hub of the Newcastle-based Rising Tide (RT) movement.

#RisingTide exists to channel civil resistance, specifically non-violent direct action for #climate defence.

The annual highlight is the blockading of the #Newcastle Coal Port - the largest by volume of its kind in the world. This blockade includes a large and growing Canberra contingent. And throughout the year there are team building activities, information sessions, Discobedience dance, choir, film nights, trivia nights and ad hoc protest actions in Canberra. See Rising Tide media releases for more info on past activities. risingtide.org.au/media

Follow this account for updates on what Rising Tide is up to, information on how you can get involved, climate wins and losses in #Australia and abroad, and social justice aligned actions.

Hurrah! @risingtide_cbr are now on Mastodon! They haven’t started posting yet, but do give them a follow if you want to keep up with events and news.

The #RisingTide group in #Canberra organises social events, Discobedience dance, choir, NVDA actions, film nights, trivia nights, and a big group who’ve blockaded the #Newcastle coal port for a weekend in November each year for the past 3 years.

If anyone's wondering how things went with the arrests from #RisingTide blockading the world's largest coal port in #Newcastle at the end of November 2025, here's an update from one of the arrestees - former Senator Janet Rice from Victoria:

Yesterday I was on 2XX radio in Canberra to chat about this year’s Rising Tide protestival.

Had a lovely convo with Annie about decision-making processes that leave nobody behind, and what it’s like to get arrested and how we stay true to the foundations of non violent direct action and civil disobedience grounded in radical love.

The interview will be online for about 30 days if you want to listen.

Goes to prove that when there is nothing bad these trolls can say about climate activists, they make shit up.Thanks for calling it out — there should be more of that in every media (except SkyNews of course because it’s full of it).

Oops, I missed this letter of mine published in the Newcastle Herald on 10/12:

I WAS slightly puzzled by a few people saying online that Rising Tide left rubbish on Horseshoe Beach after the blockade, as I was aware of the great effort they made to keep the whole area immaculate. It turns out someone faked a photo of the beach covered in rubbish, blaming Rising Tide, and it has spread far and wide on social media. I presume this was the source of the rubbish comments. Just goes to show we need to question everything.

🚨⏰
The Australia Institute -
The people of Australia collectively own all the resources under the ground. This means that the coal in NSW is the property of the Australian people too.

Because of this, mining companies have to pay the NSW Government a “royalty” if they want to dig up and sell coal.

Royalties are not taxes. They are a payment for a resource. Just like a builder has to pay for the bricks used to make a house and pay tax when they sell the house, mining companies have to pay royalties for coal and then pay tax once they sell it.

If NSW were a country, it would be the third-largest exporter of coal in the world, smaller only than Queensland and Indonesia. With all that coal production, the mining industry and politicians frequently claim that coal royalties are large enough pay for services like schools, hospitals, teachers and nurses.

Here’s one quote from former NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro:

“[Coal] is the state’s largest export commodity, and is a major source of revenue, which the NSW Government uses to help fund essential services and infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, roads and transport.”

But do royalties really fund all these things?

The short answer is no.

ABC #news reporting (both on TV and their app) on #bushfires in #newsouthwales and #tasmania , including property damage and at least one death, without using the term #climatechange .

No reference to the urgency of the energy transition. No mention made of the uninsurable properties due to climate risks.

This is #misinformation

Holy smoke, climate denying trolls are making fake pictures showing a huge mess left behind by the Rising Tide blockade on Newcastle’s Horseshoe Beach. Here’s the original pic vs the fake, which has apparently spread widely on social media. #auspol #AI #fakenews #risingtide

Several allies in the Greenpeace movement abseiled a “Phase out Coal and Gas”. If Greenpeace want to phase out coal and gas, have they considered not supporting gas companies like Equinor? #risingtide #greenpeace #equinor #Australia

RE: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:7zyzz4xguqtqxzj6qip4kn2u/post/3m74zhohwi226

"Equinor also builds a lot of renewable energy" which if Greenpeace did the bare minimum of research, they would know is not true.

Thousands of protesters travelled from across the continent to blockade the world's largest coal port at Newcastle. 156 people were arrested after authorities failed to prevent them from closing the port, despite NSW's draconian anti-protest laws.

Later tonight, I’m going to start posting my reflections on this weekend just gone’s #RisingTide blockade of #Newcastle coal port, but here’s a good starting point… I was on the protest site for all of five minutes before I did this interview with Newcastle Herald. Lovely journalist and photographer to chat with.

I'm so sick of aggressive right-wing climate denialists talking BS, wrecking progress of the renewables rollout and locally, attacking the Rising Tide blockade on nitpicking points like "unsafe on-water behaviour observed by police". Meanwhile in Asia... #auspol #climatechange #risingtide

Rising tide was good, mood and spirits surprisingly lifted towards the end... I do wonder why 🤔

💪🏽We stand with coal workers 💪🏼 As the #RisingTide crossed into the channel to disrupt the coal export industry, Zack Tritton talked on the beach about bridging the gap between climate activists and workers, standing up to corporate greed together 💚❤️💙
