Good morning. ☕☕☕
10 October 2025
Last night, we attended our nephew’s graduation from the Basic Peace Officer’s Course—a police academy run by a Texas sheriff’s department. He’s now officially a deputy. It was a proud moment for all of us, a rite of passage and a major milestone in his life.
After the ceremony, we headed to Pappadeaux’s for supper. With a large party in tow, seating proved tricky. Eventually, the manager emerged with a plan: two adjacent tables near the window, one already empty, the other occupied by guests who had finished eating, paid their bill, and were simply lingering. We stood outside, watching through the glass as the scene unfolded. The tables were, in essence, half ours—but the second group wasn’t budging. I suspect they knew others were waiting. Eventually, I saw the manager approach them. He must’ve asked them to leave. Maybe he used that old nightclub line I remember from my younger days: “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.”
Once seated, I was already fading. I told my wife it was past my bedtime. She reassured me I’d be fine, and I replied, “It’s ten minutes to Wapner.” A small comfort—proof that my odd sense of humor hadn’t yet abandoned me.
As the evening settled in, I found myself quietly observing. I can’t follow the chatter in noisy settings, so I drifted into thought. I noticed our nephew and his younger entourage had claimed one table, while we—the elders—gathered at the other. The generational divide was clear but not unwelcome. It felt like a gentle sorting, a ceremonial seating of past and future.

Forget graduating school: the passage into adulthood should be sailing around the world solo. Call it the Rite of Circumnavigation.

Music festivals are a great place for some people to discover new music & I'm enjoying the livestreams. For in person attendees it seems to be a dance party and an experience, almost a #RiteOfPassage
For performers the experience is more mixed. The bigger the listing, the higher the expectations. https://www.theringer.com/music/2023/4/20/23690896/frank-ocean-coachella-festival-weekend-1-2-cancellation

The characters are fully realized. The tropes of the genre are respected, but critically examined. The pace is fast moving, the action interesting, the technology appropriately awe-inspiring, and the humanity of the characters evident.
How do you rate the absolute pinnacle of a series, the Heinlein Juvenile, that doesn't belong to the series? I rate it highly. /FIN
The character's progress from annoying misfit to engaged member of her authoritarian polity, told in the first person in the guise of a memoir of her Trial, is engaging and thoughtful. The book is steeped in the overpopulation issues of the 60's, but the ecological collapses brought on by various forms of fundamentalism, economical and religious, still resonate today. /3
Respectful to the genre while sometimes savagely and subtly commenting on it, Panshin has written the story of a young woman who is the daughter of the administrator of starship made of a miles-wide asteroid as she faces her rite of passage, her Trial. /2

One of the cornerstones of 1950's SF was the Heinlein Juvenile, a series of a dozen young adult science fiction coming-of-age novels written by Robert Heinlein. Authors who grew up on them have attempted to reproduce them, since. None but Panshin have gotten it exactly right. /1
