It seems a bunch of yobbos have invaded a sacred ritual held in a clearing in a forest.

The treatment of light and shade is exquisite in this 1884 engraving, published in a book “Bohemia: oint work of Czech writers and artists”, by František Adolf Šubert, lead, and František Adolf Borovský, co-editor.

In this 1884 picture by then-popular Czech artist Adolf Liebscher (brother to Karel, who was in charge of the pictures for this book), there is a small clearing in a forest of thick-trunked ancient trees. Aa horned warrior is using a spear to kill a man in a priest’s robe. Another priest leans back against the tree, arms uplifted, either in a dying pose or a supplication to a deity that seems unlikely to intervene helpfully. The linden tree has skills fastened to its trunk, along with carved face-masks, and a small creature that might be an idol stands on a stone altar.
