A principios de los años noventa, mientras filmaba «Mrs. Doubtfire» en San Francisco, *Robin Williams* hizo una petición que casi nadie notó. Pidió que parte del equipo técnico fuera contratado desde un refugio cercano para personas sin hogar.
No lo anunció, no lo explicó y no pidió que se mencionara su nombre. Solo dijo que necesitaba gente para catering, limpieza, carga, producción y pidió que al menos diez personas vinieran de allí.
Luego hizo lo mismo en la siguiente película, en la siguiente y en casi todas.
Un asistente de dirección contó después que era una condición habitual en sus contratos: cada rodaje debía incluir a personas que nadie solía contratar.
Al final de su vida, más de mil quinientas personas habían trabajado gracias a esa decisión silenciosa.
Uno de los hombres contratados durante «Mrs. Doubtfire» dijo años más tarde: “Me trató como si siempre hubiera estado allí. Me hablaba todos los días. Bromeaba conmigo como si fuéramos viejos amigos.” *Robin* nunca habló de ello. Otros lo hicieron después.
A finales de los años ochenta, tras un espectáculo en Nueva York, entró solo en un refugio con varias cajas de pizza. Se sentó en el suelo. Escuchó. No hizo chistes para un público. No dio discursos. Un hombre recordó después: “No nos preguntó por nuestros errores. Nos preguntó qué nos hacía reír cuando éramos niños.”
Durante el rodaje de «Good Will Hunting», volvió a pedir que se contratara gente de refugios. Uno de ellos ahorró lo suficiente para alquilar una habitación. *Robin* le compró un traje para ir a entrevistas:
“Todos merecen una segunda oportunidad”, dijo simplemente.
Algunos refugios recibieron grandes donaciones anónimas. En uno de Los Ángeles, la carta de agradecimiento volvió sin destino: “no existe esa dirección”. Un trabajador reconoció la letra.
*Whoopi Goldberg* lo resumió una vez así: “No quería aplausos por ayudar. Quería que las cosas pasaran.”
Durante *Patch Adams*, llevó personalmente cajas de calcetines, guantes y abrigos a un refugio cercano. Cuando le preguntaron por qué, respondió: “El frío no espera a que estés listo.”
Incluso en gira, salía al amanecer a repartir café y sándwiches. Cuando un guardia le preguntó por qué lo hacía, contestó: “Porque aquí es donde está la gente.”
*Robin Williams* no convirtió la bondad en un espectáculo.
La convirtió en hábito.
En sistema, en algo que ocurría incluso cuando nadie miraba.
Y quizá ese fue el papel más importante que interpretó.
