For those who understand #Slovak, I had the pleasure of talking with Romano fórum about my long-term research among Romani musical communities in Slovakia – specifically about my film #HopaLide, my project on #RomaniChords, the myth of Romani #MusicalBlood, and – last but not least – why Roma should have a stronger voice in researching their own culture.

The idea that some ethnic groups are born with #MusicalBlood is everywhere.

Roma. Jews. African Americans. Cubans. And many more.

But why does this idea persist? And what does it do in the real world?

In my new article, I unpack the anatomy of “musical blood” – using the case of Slovak Roma to show how this belief shapes their lives.

CCying everyone interested in
#Ethnomusicology, #Anthropology, #Musicology, #WorldMusic – also #RomaniStudies & #RomaniMusic

Let’s dive in 👇

🧵1/17

A schematic diagram showing how ideas of “musical blood” emerge through cross-cultural comparison.

Two triangular structures represent two music cultures: Music X and Music Y. Each triangle connects:

Music culture at the top

Musical aptitude for that music (bottom left)

Musical enculturation for that music (bottom right)

Arrows labelled “requires/affords” link these points, showing that each music culture both requires and fosters certain aptitudes and learning processes.

In the middle, between Music X and Music Y, dotted lines and speech bubbles illustrate how stereotypes arise:

Autostereotypes: “We are X, and we are born to improvise unlike Y who need sheet music.” / “We are X, and we don’t need music school like Y.”

Heterostereotypes: “X play so well and they don’t even read music!”

A chain of overlapping circles labelled “emerging stereotypes” runs between the two cultures, showing that repeated comparisons generate ideas of “musical blood.”

On 13–14th of February 2025, I organised a #Hackathon on #RomaniChords that explored various methodological avenues for my #MSCA project’s data acquisition.

Here’s a short thread summarising what we dealt with and achieved during these days.

CCying everyone interested in #Ethnomusicology, #Musicology, #ComputationalMusicology, #MusicScience, #RomaniStudies, #RomaniMusic and alike.

Let’s jump right into it!

... and this time, we were lucky to have Vladimir Sendrei – one of the protagonists of #HopaLide – for a Q&A.

He managed to fill the entire cinema with laughter and a positive atmosphere (just before getting on a night train to catch up with another music gig... how significant for him!)

The discussion was moderated by Dominik Hronec who has helped immensely with organising this event. Many thanks to him (and the Edison Filmhub team!)

I can't tell you how much I love open-air cinema. Let alone how great an experience it is to see your own film on an open-air screen, in the place where it was made, and with the people who participated in its creation!

See the pictures from screening #HopaLide in Kokava's Stará škola!

Thanks to Film Europe and Koliesko Folklore Festival for putting such a fascinating event together!

According to Wikipedia (though there's a "citation needed" on this part), this is the first postwar recording to use the term "klezmer" to refer to the music.

To me, it sounds very, very similar to something I shared during #RomaniMusic week: youtu.be/-YO68M79B5o. Does anyone know how the two are related?

Here's a fantastic album by Katja Šulc. Romani influences, modern sound.

She is from Slovenia and recorded this in Mexico. Part of my #BandcampFriday purchases! 💸

Thanks to @luka for recommending it!

the door is separating them, hunger uniting them
and the anger with the heaven, too
both are cursing their lives
and from the belly can be heard

#Flamenco is a style closely associated with Romani music. It evolved in Andalucía (the southern region of Spain), so I've always listened to it with Spanish words.

Oliver Rajamani (from Texas, of all places!) takes it all the way back to India, where Roma people actually originated from, which sounded surprising to my ears at first but after a while made a ton of sense. Then, he gives a fascinating explanation of its history.
