When the water goes down there'll be a tree stuck in the stepping stones.

The river in Rothbury is the highest I've seen it since early spring. These waves are caused by stepping stones that are well submerged.

Rothbury Bridge is only a couple of hundred metres away so the frequent winter periods when they are submerged are not a problem.

The rain from earlier this week has left the Coquet high, but today is lovely and sunny. Ideal for a morning walk.

The Railway Hotel is going to be auctioned with a pretty low guide price of £180,000

However I think the purchase price will be a lot lower than what it will cost to make something of it, the interior was videoed by some "urban explorers".

I hope something can be done with it. It's a fantastic stone building in a prime location. However it has previously been refused planning permission to convert into multiple flats as it has very limited parking spaces and roadside parking is always busy on the middle of the village.

There's a patch of Access Land to the south east of Rothbury. The path up to it used to have white birch railings, but these fell down a year ago. The path has now become quite overgrown to the point where an unofficial path about 100 metres further along the cutting is easier.

Earlier I was going to walk across the stepping stones and return by the bridge. I ended up taking the bridge both ways!

A beautiful day. I'm just off the Carriageway, I've come from Rothbury and this is just past the Physic Lane turning to Thropton, though I'm not going there today

I have written up a scenic walk from Rothbury to Alnwick that I did earlier this month. I have mapped it from the bus stop outside the Queen's head in Rothbury to Alnwick bus station. The link allows a gpx download of the route as well as giving a map and directions.

I'd like to credit Shepherds Walks for giving me the route from Edlingham to Alnwick. I was having difficulty finding a route for this part on the map, when I came across their "Walk 36". They really do a great service by providing these guides which also give interesting historic information on the walks. If my route is any use to them as a "challenge walk" then I would be very happy for them to use it

I found this a really challenging walk (though I did add an extra mile by missing two turnings!). so I would recommend it to confident hikers in good weather. I have noted a couple of escape routes which allow you to return or continue by bus, though there are many other road points where you could call for a lift!

One caveat is that I am not sure that the route between Cartington hill and Long Crag is the easiest route. It involves crossing access land, and none of the routes I have tried is particularly easy.

Also if you miss the last 471 from Alnwick the later buses involve a change and take a long time so set off in good time, or maybe do it in reverse, bus to Alnwick and walk back.

I've just taken the dog for a walk and got soaked in a sudden rainstorm. As a consolation I just looked outside and there is one of the brightest and clearest rainbows I've ever seen!

Another lovely day in Rothbury

A large cairn is in the right of the image. To the left are views of green fields and the small town of Rothbury.

I'm trying a hike that I did not complete last time. I'm walking from Rothbury up Cartington hill, via Hard Heugh to Long Crag, then back again. On the last attempt I only had a third of the water id brought with me when I was probably two thirds or three quarters of my way to the destination, and time was getting on. This s time I set of earlier and have plenty of water.

I've now passed Hard Heugh and having just started the ascent to Long Crag I've stopped for a sandwich and some tea.

I had a nice walk around Rothbury today, through Whitton, then down to Newtown and back along the river.

I had the second temporary break in my Facebook free January when I became worried about this Ram I met on a local walk. He was licking and mouthing his leg just above his foot, and unlike any other sheep I've seen. He also let me walk right up to him, within touching distance. I was worried and posted on the local Facebook page. It turns out he is just very used to people and probably has an itchy foot. Nothing to worry about.

#SheepOfMastodon #rothbury #tup #ram

A ram is lying in a rather undignified position and curling round to lick and mouth his back leg. I have seen my dog in this position before but never a sheep. From replies I received sheep do this but usually only when a long way from people. However this one is very used to people and almost a pet, so he is quite happy to ignore anyone close by.
