FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A clinical trial is underway to assess the effectiveness and safety of sipavibart, AstraZeneca’s long-acting monoclonal antibody designed to provide protection against Covid-19, as a potential treatment for Long Covid, the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) and the Schmidt Initiative for Long Covid (SILC) announced today.

With funding from SILC, NSU researchers led by Dr. Nancy Klimas are enrolling 100 patients in the multi-year study with the goal of improving their Long Covid symptoms and restoring them to full health.

Long COVID biomarkers found – associated with respiratory problems

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have identified biomarkers in the blood associated with symptoms of long COVID, particularly severe respiratory disorders. The discovery can pave the way for future diagnosis and treatment. The results are published in the top-ranking scientific journal Nature Immunology.

Long COVID, also known as Post COVID, is a condition characterised by persistent symptoms of previous COVID-19. A new study from Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, and Cardiff University, UK, led by Marcus Buggert, docent at the Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institutet (Huddinge), has identified a set of proteins in the blood of people with Long COVID.

“The proteins were mainly found in patients with Long COVID and severe respiratory problems,” says Dr Buggert. “This is a biomarker pattern that we know to be linked to inflammatory signal pathways involved in cell death and lung damage and that has also been observed in other patient groups with severe pulmonary disorders.”

The following day cells were prepared for electron microscopy by high-pressure freezing and freeze-substitution, then sectioned and imaged by dual-axis electron tomography. Virus-containing exit compartments were located in both samples, and virions that had completely separated from cellular membranes were selected and analyzed in 3D in order to determine the structure of intact virions and the arrangement of internal ribonucleoprotein complexes.

Het percentage dat een positieve test meldt bij de infectieradar is echter afgenomen naar 0,1%. De griepgolf is voorbij en dit is te zien in het aandeel van de infectieradar met luchtwegklachten en de oversterfte volgens het @rivm
