A rare treat for Stargate fans and a funny rant for non fans.

Acting realistically and believable in a TV show can be achieved by many tricks

An Episode of Stargate SG1 (Season 1 - "Solitude") had Sam (Amanda Tapping) and Jack (Richard Dean Anderson) stuck in an ice cave after the Stargate malfunctioned.

The production crew rolled in snow and ice and lowered the temperature under the freezing point so the factors had to crawl in snow and ice and where cold while the characters fought for their survival in the story.

Jack O'Neill was hurt and he is maybe a tactical good thinking person, but not a tech specialist so Dean's role was to crawl in the cold while Amanda's character, Samantha Carter, had to use ice cold tools at one point she simply couldn't keep it straight anymore after hours in the cold and this blooper happened.

@troed
Long ago, before the universal infestation of SI in the civilised world, we used to have some fun units in physics which included the Ångström, indicated by "Å". So, the stargate always makes me think of tiny tiny things.

Episode 68 – Stargate SG-1 New Ground (S3 E19)
Our favorite Stargate team gets caught between religion and science in Stargate SG-1 season 3, episode 19, New Ground. Patrice and Jeff discuss how the episode handles the philosophical dilemma of balancing dogma with data.

The very next episode after actual time travel to 1969 in SG1 was the episode where they wake up in the "Future".

One hell of a way to mess with the audience, I approve.

Did Sam every 'explain' why the initial 'splash' doesn't destroy the iris every time?

:-)

@krutonium

This contradicts what we know from many other episodes; that the initial 'splash' totally destroys anything it touches.

(e.g the one where a toppled gate excavates a cavern into which Teal'c can fall and dig his way out IIRC.)

@krutonium

IIRC the 'theory' is that you can't stop a gate from accepting an incoming connection, but placing a suitable barrier (like the SGC's titanium iris) in front of it prevents matter from 'reintegrating'.
However, the writers invented a loophole whereby a very high power incoming particle beam could transmit enough energy directly into the barrier to eventually melt it.

I'm not sure that the CTB* is entirely consistent on this although I think the main reason is that we wouldn't have had a really fun episode. :-)

@sollat @gedeonm Yes, the first bit of #Stargate Atlantis has some growing pains. It gets really awesome really fast.

Part of the early trouble was they didn't know who to cast for the scientist role on the team when they wrote the pilot. They were coming up on a drop dead filming date and decided to go with David Hewlett reprising his #SG1 role as Rodney McKay. Unfortunately, the lines weren't really written for Dr. McKay, but they were out of time and just rolled with it.

“Stargate SG-1 ran for ten years plus two movies, which is a pretty remarkable feat of television production. So how do you get a show to go 214 episodes? A bit of luck and a lot of talent, no doubt. Here we’re looking at four times during #Stargate #SG1's production that a finale was written to end the show ... and how even the actual final episode couldn’t keep the team down!”
