looks like a great technology for iGPU like the RX 8600S and similar others.

I think that #CAMM is a bad design compared to #SODIMM & #DIMM...

Still, just gimme regular-ass socketed Chips & #DIMMs ffs!

  • Also we don't need to make the THINN-nest machines ffs - just make them #repairable and #serviceable and #upgradeable, because #AntiRepairDesign is way more unsustainable than the 0,1% of idiots who give a shit about whether their #DDR5-RAM can do 6400MT/s or 4800MT/s, simply because most users won't notice that at all (unlike switching from a 2,5" #SATA-#HDD running at 5400rpm to an #NVMe-#SSD that maxes out #PCIe 4x connections.

#FACT: #RAM & #SSD|s are inevitably dying due to age and use and like #ThermalPaste need to be #replaceable for a device to work longterm!

I'd rather have a #THICC af #laptop that actually survives my daily use than some flimsy #tablet that snaps in half if I sneeze at it.

  • No seriously, most devices can't even fit proper ports and cooling fans for no good reason whatsoever!

Also I think it's insulting to frame basic things like "stability" as a negative.

Ran some memory tests on my Linux computer over the last two days. You think it's trying to tell me something? #ram #memoryfail #linux #SODIMM Definitely one of my memory modules is on the fritz. Contacted Kingston memory to ask them if they could do something and they asked me to take photos of the ram module serial no. I'm hopeful

@omgubuntu did they at least keep #SODIMM & #M2 slots?

2024-11-12

Just figured out why a coworker laptop didn’t boot at all: brand new memory.

Changed them to , booted right up. Made the change again to be sure, no POST.

This confirms me they use faulty , and memory chips, slap their stickers and sell them.

@philpem @foone mind you these were made before #JEDEC specified #SODIMM|s and RAM manufacturers like #Infenieon (#Qimonda) and #Micron as well as the trend towards #configureability & #repairability as well as #upgradeability kicked off...

2024-08-25

Now that the trend of soldering RAM into is taking off from , and , there is .

The market will die, and CAMM manufacturing will have to shift to desktops where upgradeability and performance are core features.

What is #CAMM2? Meet the faster, smaller, upgradeable new memory standard: Compression Attached Memory Module
#CAMM originated with #Dell as a project to replace bulkier #SODIMM memory slots. But the company worked with #JEDEC, a semiconductor standards body, which tweaked it and made CAMM2 available to a number of different PC companies. There's also the low-power LPDDR5 CAMM2, designed for thin #laptops, shortening this to #LPCAMM2

@cannibal

I'm bringing back there two #Lenovo #Thinkpads: an #R400 & a #W500. Both are curb finds - scrounge some power supplies, they both booted up fine. Ordered a battery to replace the missing one on the R400 and the #SODIMM upgrades that I did not already have on hand to max out the memory on both. Also ordered a #PCMCIA card to add #eSATA and one for #USB3 capabilities for my drive docks.

The R400 is running #Win10 32 bit just fine, the W500 is next. Yea, #windoz for some hard drive testing software that only runs on #windowz 😞

The #T45 is next with a lightweight #Linux or #BSD distro. Pictures & updates on a future #makeshitmonday

CAMM2 might be the new memory standard moving forward:
Here's the basics:

- CAMM2 is a new memory module standard that aims to replace SO-DIMM.

- The modules are thinner, faster, have higher capacity, & have better power efficiency than SO-DIMM, but are currently more expensive to produce.

- CAMM2 modules can be used in both laptops and desktop PC.

The article offers more detail.

I bought faster memory and now my memory is slower 😞 I was careful to match the old and new sticks in the same banks but apparently Apple's policy is: use the fastest available CAS latency of any installed RAM, then adjust the to what's possible on all of them. The old RAM was CL11-1600, I added CL9-1600, fastest available is then probably CL10 on the old sticks but with that it can't go above 1333. So now all RAM operates at 1333 MHz. D'oh!

Hacked on SO-DIMM Slot was Worth a Shot

Finding unpopulated pads on a circuit board is often a sign that the device in question has some untapped potential. These blank spots on the board could be left over from features or capabilities that were deleted from the design, or perhaps even represent an optional upgrade that wasn't installed on this particular specimen. So we certainly understand why [d0rk] was fascinated by the empty SO-DIMM footprint he recently found on a laptop's motherboard.

The budget Celeron machine shipped with 4 GB of RAM installed in its single socket, a situation [d0rk] hoped he could improve upon with the addition of a second module. But could it really be as simple as pulling the socket from a dead motherboard and soldering it into place? Would other components need to be added to the board? Could the BIOS cope with the unexpected upgrade? There was only one way to find out…

Room to grow

At first, it seemed like the patient didn't survive the operation. But a close look uncovered that the power button had actually gotten damaged somewhere along the line. Once [d0rk] fixed that the machine started up, but unfortunately the operating system didn't see the extra RAM module. Even after upgrading the BIOS, the computer remained oblivious to the additional memory.

When he went back in to inspect his solder work for shorts or bad joints, disaster struck. For reasons that aren't immediately clear, the computer no longer starts. Even after pulling the transplanted SO-DIMM slot off the board entirely, [d0rk] says it won't make it through the self-test. Obviously a disappointing conclusion, but we respect the effort he put into the attempt.

While this memory upgrade didn't go according to plan, we've seen enough success stories over the years to balance it out. From old wireless routers to cutting-edge video cards, plenty of gadgets have received a memory boost courtesy of a soldering iron and a steady hand.

[Thanks to Timothy for the tip.]

Si certain.es me lisent, je suis ouvert à toutes suggestions.
