• Most notably when your #VPN is close by to the authorities or your #hoster is known to snitch or shutdown services without a duely issued warrant...

For the most part, getting #Journalists setup with @tails_live / @tails / #Tails, maybe a custom/private @torproject / #TorBridge and at worst a private #SSHtunnel to circumvent "#GreatFirewall|s" is the way to go.

• And in extreme cases like #NorthKorea, it's propably better to setup a #SneakerNet like #RimjinGang did...

Here is something I learned today.

If you are running a cheapie #VPS its #sshtunnel might succumb to "Tunnel decay" as its server resources come under pressure.

Will try to configure the tunnel so when it fails it will auto restart.
I know it's obvious.

I don't think you would necessarily have to disable anything to access the GUI from localhost. Which is what you would be doing with an SSH tunnel.

Adding a password and forcing HTTPS should then be done before changing the configuration to allow access to the GUI from the network.

One additional upside to this technique is that I can connect to multiple VPNs at the same time. So I can monitor a server on Network 1 while deploying code to Network 2 without having to pick only one network that I'll be connected to. I pay the performance cost of the VMs, but that hasn't been a real issue for quite some time (and you can minimize it with good VM construction).

Useful when working with clients at different institutions!
