In 2014 when I attended a #NASASocial to cover #SpaceX #CRS3 #CargoDragon launch to #ISS, #NASA gave a tour of the Vehicle Assembly Building. There's an #STS107 sign on the wall where recovered parts from Columbia were stored after the investigation. #DayOfRemembrance #space #history
One of the #STS107 Columbia eyewitnesses, Chris Valentine, got copies of videos from eyewitnesses (same ones as entered into accident investigation evidence) and synced them in a timeline with Mission Control audio. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ1BfJZgMN0#NASA #DayOfRemembrance #space #history
People are talking about Columbia's break-up OTD in 2003. Someone once told me much of the wreckage was stored in a room in the Vertical Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center. In 2012, I happened to be there for a story on the end of the shuttle program and took an elevator up to that room. Looked inside. Yes, pieces of Columbia were laid out. Felt like a tresspasser on a grave site or something so left pretty quickly. Eerie and sad.
Ad Astra per Aspera... In the ruins of Onizuka AFS, Sunnyvale, California was an off the books Space Shuttle Columbia Memorial. It was behind what was the tank and antenna farm for the Blue Cube. It has been vandalized beyond recognition now sadly. I came across it in 2018 and tried to get the USAF or NASA to at least try to preserve it to no avail.
To the crew of STS 107, your courage will never be forgotten.
When we organized gatherings in 2004 & 2005 in SJ for #STS107 Columbia photographers & eyewitnesses, we found everyone who went out to see the re-entry experienced a mourning reaction as if we knew the crew, unlike those who saw it on news. #NASA #DayOfRemembrance #space #history
Mt Hamilton near San Jose was unique on the 1000+ mile corridor where #STS107 eyewitnesses met each other that morning. I was talking via Ham Radio with Don AA6W who was on the Santa Cruz Mountains. Everywhere else eyewitnesses were alone. (Many eyewitnesses on Mt Hamilton met when we all pulled over at a turnout near the summit after viewing the re-entry pass.) #NASA #DayOfRemembrance #space #history
#STS107 is personal for me. On Feb 1, 2003 I drove up Mt Hamilton to get above the fog and see the pre-dawn Columbia re-entry. I became an eyewitness to disaster, a billowing smoke trail instead of the expected meteor streak of prior re-entries. #DayOfRemembrance #space #history
21 years ago, Feb 1, 2003: #STS107 Space Shuttle Columbia re-entry accident, 7 dead. Investigation later found plausible ways to rescue crew if #NASA managers had looked into observed ice impact on orbiter during launch. https://www.nasa.gov/remembering-columbia-sts-107/ #DayOfRemembrance #space #history

This will be the last launch of the #Antares230 series rocket. The #Antares300 built with NG's partner, #Firefly in should be making its debut in 2025.
This is an amazing piece of writing. #Columbia #STS107

Twenty years ago this morning, seven astronauts died as the #SpaceShuttle #Columbia (the first real spaceship I saw fly) disintegrated upon re-entry — this is the incredible true story of what might have been

On February 1st, 2003 STS-107 Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated during reentry killing all onboard. In 2018 while exploring what remained of Onizuka Air Force Station, I found a small memorial built by those stationed there. Names of those lost were arrayed around what appeared to have been a garden. with plaques naming the astronauts. #abandoned #aviation #avgeek #Columbia #STS107 #aviationlovers #history #bluecube #Onizuka #space #NSA #NASA #spaceshuttle #shuttle

In a weird replay of life, it was my mum who first told me of the loss of Columbia, calling me that Saturday afternoon.
She did the same when Challenger was lost in 1986. Weird how things like that repeat themselves. #STS107
#HailColumbia
20 years today. As Bob Crippen (the pilot of STS-1) said in his memorial speech about the crew...
Hail Rick, Hail Willie, Hail Laurel, Hail Dave, Hail Kalpana, Hail Michael, Hail Ilan, #HailColumbia
