Record-breaking 228m sediment core reveals unprecedented evidence of West #Antarctic Ice Sheet retreat

An international team drilled the longest-ever sediment core from beneath an ice sheet, uncovering 23 million years of #ClimateHistory. This breakthrough helps scientists predict how the ice sheet—holding enough water to raise global sea levels by 4-5m—will respond to warming. The #SWAIS2C project found evidence of past open ocean conditions, warning of potential future collapse.

You know you've truly found your life's purpose when it's after 9 on a Tuesday night (after a very long day of regular work in one of the craziest weeks of the year) but you're editing and writing dense text and brainstorming with unbridled joy.

Tuesday night is #Antarctica night! I'm writing a plain language summary for educators about #SWAIS2C Sensitivity of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to 2 Celsius (of warming).

We'll drill through 2 sites on the Ross Ice Shelf and into the sediment below. Analyzing this sediment will help us learn more about past melting of the WAIS (West Antarctic Ice Sheet) when Earth was warmer and global sea levels were higher.

A view across the Ross Ice Shelf to distant mountains. Clouds thickly pepper the sky, but brilliant blue peeks through and patches of light dot the ice. It's starkly beautiful. Not pictured: my unbridled joy at being there at last.

Tuesday night is Antarctica night & I’m working on #SWAIS2C, a joint project between the USA, NZ, and our various partner nations.

McMurdo Station is the USA’s primary base & Scott Base is NZ’s. I 💙 that they’re side by side!
